The Ork Empire of Charadon

The Ork Empire of Charadon is the biggest and longest-lived Ork empire in Warhammer 40k, centred on the Charadon System in Ultima Segmentum and ruled by a Warboss titled the Arch-Arsonist. For centuries it’s been a running sore for the Imperium, and it’s the empire that nearly wiped out the Crimson Fists.

What the ork empire of charadon actually is

It’s a vast Ork domain built around the Charadon System in Ultima Segmentum. Its ruler carries the title Arch-Arsonist of Charadon rather than a personal name, which tells you how the empire works: the title outlasts whoever holds it.

Sources describe it as the largest and most enduring Ork empire on record, and it’s been a problem for Ultima Segmentum for countless centuries. The most notorious Arch-Arsonist is Snagrod, the one who launched the invasion of Rynn’s World.

Why it matters

For a long time the empire couldn’t grow the way it wanted. The Ultramarines kept it contained, and strikes led by Librarian Tigurius hit the Arch-Arsonist’s forces hard enough to stop them assembling a full-scale Waaagh! into Ultramar.

That changed when Tyranid incursions into Ultima Segmentum pulled the Ultramarines elsewhere. With fewer troops free to watch the Orks, the Empire of Charadon took its opening and pushed into the easternmost parts of the Ultramar system.

  • The largest and most long-lasting Ork empire in the setting
  • Held in check by the Ultramarines and Tigurius for centuries
  • Broke loose once Tyranid pressure drew Imperial forces away
  • A direct threat to Ultramar, more than a distant nuisance

Rynn’s World and the Crimson Fists

In 988.M41, the Empire of Charadon under Arch-Arsonist Snagrod invaded Rynn’s World, homeworld of the Crimson Fists Space Marine Chapter. The fighting nearly destroyed the Chapter outright and levelled their fortress-monastery.

It’s the clearest example of what Charadon can do when it commits. A single Ork empire came close to erasing a First Founding successor Chapter in one campaign.

Known worlds and notable Orks

Charadon is the world the empire is named for, and it’s the only one the sources name directly. The empire clearly spans more than that, given its size and reach, but the records don’t list the rest.

One named Ork worth knowing is Brug Wellshod, a leader of the Iron Stompers. Enemy plasma fire left him permanently welded into his suit, which is about as Ork as it gets.
