The Power Lance

The power lance is a power weapon built around a long shaft, giving the wielder reach that a sword or axe just can’t match. It shows up across the Imperium and among the Eldar, and it’s most famous as the weapon of choice for White Scars bikers and Imperial Knight Lancers.

What a power lance actually is

Strip it down and a power lance is a power blade on the end of a pole. Like any power weapon, it wraps its edge in a disruptive energy field that lets it cut through armour and just about anything else. Some sources also call it a power spear, and the two terms get used interchangeably.

The trade-off is baked into the design. That extra reach is great on the charge and awkward everywhere else, because a long shaft is clumsy once the fight closes in. You get one big hit, not a drawn-out duel.

White Scars and the Kontos

The White Scars are the Chapter most associated with the power lance. Their Techmarines build them to suit the Chapter’s fast, mobile style of war, and battle-brothers on bikes can wield them one-handed. A biker slamming into an enemy line with a power lance does serious damage.

The Kontos Power Lance is the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy-era version. Jaghatai Khan had them made by blending Chogorian tribal tradition with Imperial technology. A jetbike rider at full charge could punch through battle tank armour, and Golden Keshig formations carried them regularly.

Eldar and Imperial Knights

The Eldar use power lances and power glaives too. Craftworld forces like the Dire Avengers field them, and the Dark Eldar have their own versions. Known Eldar subvariants include the Star Glaive and the Executioner.

On the Imperial side, the lance scales up. Imperial Knights, especially Knight Lancers, carry much larger versions mounted on the walker itself, so the same idea works at titan-hunting scale.

Notable power lances

A few named lances carry real weight in the lore. The Spear of Telesto belonged to Sanguinius, and the Spear of Vulkan is carried by Vulkan He’stan. Jain Zar wields Zhai Morenn, while Howling Banshee Exarchs use Banshee’s Keen.

If you’re looking at related wargear, the Guardian Spear and the hunting lance are worth a look. They’re not the same weapon, but they share the same reach-first philosophy.

FAQ

What’s the difference between a power lance and a power spear?

Not much. Sources use the terms interchangeably, both describing a power blade mounted on a long shaft. The name tends to shift depending on the faction and the edition.

Why do White Scars favour the power lance?

It suits their mobile, charge-heavy way of fighting. Ridden one-handed from a bike, it delivers a devastating hit on impact, though it’s unwieldy once combat grinds into a close melee.

Can a power lance destroy a tank?

The Kontos pattern could. With a jetbike at full charge, it was said to punch through battle tank armour, which is why Golden Keshig formations used it so often.
