The Redemptionists

The Redemptionists are an extreme religious sect that worships the God-Emperor and believes humanity can only be saved by being purged of sin through fire and blood. They started in the underhives of Necromunda, but versions of their cult turn up all over the Imperium.

What they believe

Redemptionist doctrine grows out of the Imperial Creed, but pushes it much further. The original cult formed in Necromunda’s violent underhives, where its founders looked at the endless toil of hive workers, the untouched luxury of the nobles, and the anarchy around them, and decided they were already living in hell.

Their answer is total purification. Prophets preach that mankind is doomed unless it’s cleansed of sin, and members swear to carry that cleansing out personally with fire and blade. That’s why they don’t stop at mutants, psykers, or aliens. They see sin in every living thing, and the sinner has to die with it.

  • Three sins get special attention: mutation, being a psyker, and heresy (which includes denying the Redemption or opposing its members)
  • The creed bans alcohol and narcotics, and requires daily prayer and self-flagellation to stay pure
  • Members who break the rules are cast out and become outcasts among their own people
  • Hivers who don’t follow the Redemption are written off as worthless infidels

How the cult is organised

The Redemption is an unsanctioned sect, so it has almost no formal structure or property. Instead of grand cathedrals, members meet in secret, often in small impromptu gatherings. Hoods and masks are common during rituals, and some believers keep their faces hidden from unbelievers at all times.

In House Cawdor, the cult has effectively become the official religion, which gives it a power base the wider sect otherwise lacks. Elsewhere it survives as a loose network of cells and mobs rather than a unified church.

Mobs, crusades, and politics

When Redemptionists gather without a priest to lead them, they form a mob: an angry crowd of poor citizens that lashes out at whatever it decides is sinful. With a priest at the front, the same energy becomes something closer to a crusade, directed and sustained.

That unpredictability is why the cult matters beyond Necromunda. It’s a permanent source of violence in the underhive, and its members don’t recognise any authority that tries to restrain them, including the Imperium’s own. Similar cults exist across the galaxy, so the Redemption is less a single organisation than a pattern that keeps repeating.

Where you’ll see them

The Redemptionists are best known from Necromunda, where they’re a playable gang and a constant threat in the underhive. In wider Warhammer 40,000 lore they show up as an example of how far the Imperial Creed can be twisted, and they sit close to the Ecclesiarchy without being part of it.

FAQ

Are the Redemptionists part of the Ecclesiarchy?

No. They’re an unsanctioned sect, so the official church doesn’t control them. Their beliefs come from the Imperial Creed, but they take it far beyond what the Ecclesiarchy teaches.

Why do Redemptionists wear masks?

It’s a religious practice. Members commonly cover their faces during rituals, and some believe their faces should stay hidden from unbelievers at all times.

Do Redemptionists only target mutants and psykers?

No, that’s what sets them apart from most extreme sects. They see sin in every creature, so anyone can become a target, including other Imperials.
