Commander Farsight is a legendary T’au warrior who turned his back on the Ethereal caste and founded his own breakaway empire, the Farsight Enclaves. He’s one of the oldest living T’au, a master tactician, and the closest thing the T’au have to a living legend with a dark reputation.
Who is Commander Farsight?
His full name is Shas’O Vior’la Shovah Kais Mont’yr, though most people just call him O’Shovah or Commander Farsight. He was born on the T’au sept world of Vior’la sometime around the 700s of the 41st millennium, and he’s been active ever since, which is remarkable given that T’au don’t usually live that long.
He rose through the Fire Caste ranks at an unusual speed. Even as a young cadet he memorised the entire Code of Fire, outpaced older classmates in the Mont’yr battle dome, and caught the eye of Commander Puretide during his graduation. He went on to become Supreme Commander of the T’au Empire before everything fell apart.
The break with the Ethereals
Farsight’s turning point was a growing distrust of the Ethereal caste. He came to believe that the Ethereals were using the Greater Good as a tool for their own control, and he said so publicly. The quote that gets repeated most is his accusation to Aun’Va’s Elemental Council in 997.M41, where he called them out for suffocating T’au society with their edicts.
After that, he left. He took his forces into exile and founded the Farsight Enclaves, a breakaway region of space that runs on martial tradition rather than Ethereal rule. The T’au Empire now remembers him as the Great Traitor and He who Renounced the Greater Good. His old title of Supreme Commander passed to O’Shaserra, better known as Shadowsun.
The Farsight Enclaves and the Eight
The Enclaves are a small but stubborn collection of worlds that reject Ethereal authority. They keep a lot of Vior’la customs, which makes sense since that’s where Farsight came from, but they answer to him and his inner circle rather than to any Aun.
That inner circle is called the Eight, a hand-picked team of battlesuit pilots and specialists who fight alongside him. Farsight himself carries the Dawn Blade, a strange alien sword that’s tied to his long life. The Enclaves have held their ground against the T’au Empire, Orks, and Tyranids, and they’ve kept their independence through all of it.
