The Sensei

The Sensei are the Emperor’s own descendants, born from the families he fathered long before the Imperium existed. Immortal, uncorrupted by Chaos, and hated by the Inquisition, they wander the galaxy as heroes of the downtrodden.

What the Sensei actually are

Before the Imperium, the Emperor lived among ordinary people and fathered children with many women. Those bloodlines carry a dormant potential: not everyone in them becomes a Sensei, but the possibility is written into their genes.

A Sensei is someone in whom that potential has awakened. They’re ageless, they heal from almost anything that doesn’t kill them outright, and they’re walking proof that the Emperor’s bloodline didn’t end with the Primarchs.

Why Chaos can’t touch them

The Sensei’s minds are harmonious in a way that’s almost alien to the setting. They don’t carry the hate, bitterness, or irrational rage that the Chaos Gods feed on, so daemons and Warp predators simply have nothing to grip.

That means they can use psychic powers freely, drawing on the Warp without the usual risk of possession or corruption. Chaos powers are effectively invisible to them, and they’re invisible to it in turn.

  • Immortal, ageless, and fast-healing unless killed outright
  • Immune to Chaos corruption and daemonic influence
  • Powerful psykers who can channel the Warp safely
  • Naturally confident, lacking the emotions Chaos preys on

Heroes, rebels, and heretics

Sensei usually don’t know what they are. They grow up inside human society, and across the millennia they’ve been branded witches and devils just for not aging. Many end up as wandering champions, fighting Chaos and, just as often, Imperial oppression.

They tend to travel with other outsiders: rebels, abhumans, even xenos. That rebellious streak is exactly why the Inquisition declares every last one of them a heretic. A psyker who can’t be corrupted is still a psyker outside the Imperium’s control.

The Star Child connection

The Sensei are tied to the Star Child, a theory that part of the Emperor’s soul survives in the Warp. In that framework, the Sensei act as the Star Child’s champions, a mirror image of the Chaos Gods’ mortal champions.

In the 41st millennium, almost nobody knows they exist. To the rare few outside their own ranks, like the Illuminati, they’re folk tales: the Captain Eternal, the Wandering Inquisitor.

Conflicting lore

Older material, like Realm of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness, describes the Sensei very differently. There they’re only the Emperor’s direct sons, infertile, and psychic blanks that other psykers can’t perceive, rather than Chaos-proof psykers.

Later sources expand them into a whole lineage with inherited potential. If you’re reading up on them, it’s worth knowing which version you’ve landed on.

Key facts

  • The Sensei are descendants of the Emperor, fathered before the Imperium existed
  • They’re immortal, ageless, and heal from non-fatal wounds unnaturally fast
  • They’re immune to Chaos corruption and can use psychic powers without risk
  • The Inquisition declares them heretics and hunts them
  • They’re linked to the Star Child as its champions
  • Older lore calls them the Emperor’s infertile sons and psychic blanks, which conflicts with later sources

FAQ

Are the Sensei canon in modern Warhammer 40k?

They come from older lore, mainly Realm of Chaos and early Rogue Trader-era material, and haven’t been a focus of recent editions. They’re still referenced in fan and wiki sources, but treat them as legacy lore rather than current plot.

Why does the Inquisition hunt the Sensei?

Because they’re unsanctioned psykers with powers the Imperium can’t control, and their instinct to fight oppression puts them on the wrong side of Imperial authority. The Inquisition labels them heretics on principle.

Can a Sensei fall to Chaos?

No. Their lack of the emotions Chaos feeds on makes them effectively immune to corruption, which is exactly what makes them so dangerous to the Ruinous Powers.
