The Space Wolves

The Space Wolves are a Space Marine Chapter from the frozen death world of Fenris, the sons of Primarch Leman Russ. They’re famous for fighting like berserkers, ignoring the rules other Chapters follow, and still being among Humanity’s most loyal defenders.

Who the Space Wolves are

They started as the VI Legion, one of the original twenty Space Marine Legions, and stayed loyal to the Emperor during the Horus Heresy. After the Heresy the Legion was split into two Chapters: the Space Wolves kept the old name, while the Wolf Brothers were later disbanded because of gene-seed mutation.

In the Fenrisian tongue they’re called Vlka Fenryka, the Wolves of Fenris. During the Great Crusade they earned a darker nickname too: the Emperor’s executioners, the Legion he sent when a world needed punishing rather than conquering.

Fenris, the Fang, and the wolf thing

Fenris is a death world in the galactic north, a place of ice, sea monsters, and tribal warrior societies. Leman Russ was raised among those tribes, and that upbringing shaped the Legion’s whole character.

Their fortress-monastery is called the Fang. They wear pelts and wolf totems, train actual Fenrisian wolves to fight beside them, and a quirk in their gene-seed makes their canine teeth grow longer as they age. That’s where the snarl comes from.

  • Legion number: VI
  • Primarch: Leman Russ
  • Homeworld: Fenris
  • Fortress-monastery: The Fang
  • Current Chapter Master: Logan Grimnar
  • Battle cry: “For Russ and the Allfather”, or just a howl

How they fight

Close combat is the point. Space Wolves close the distance fast, hunt down the enemy’s best leaders, and kill them face to face. Their pre-Heresy specialty was shock assault, pursuit, and punishment campaigns; after the Heresy they kept the shock assault and doubled down on melee.

They don’t follow the Codex Astartes. Instead of the standard ten companies, the Chapter is built from twelve Great Companies, each led by a Wolf Lord and largely free to organise and fight however it likes.

Sagas, pride, and reputation

Every Space Wolf wants his deeds recorded in a saga, an oral account of his battle record given only to warriors who’ve earned it. Personal glory matters to them in a way it doesn’t to most Chapters.

Other Imperial forces often see arrogant, boastful brutes. That’s a mistake. Underneath the savagery they’re honourable, cunning, and fiercely protective of ordinary people, and plenty of losing battles have been turned around by the sudden arrival of their blue-grey ships.

Playing them on the tabletop

In Warhammer 40,000 the Space Wolves field regular Space Marine units alongside their own exclusive characters and wolf-themed squads. If you’re starting an army, the usual advice is to learn the core Space Marine options first, then layer the Chapter’s unique units on top.

Their classic colour scheme is blue-grey with yellow. Before the Heresy it was grey and red instead, so that’s the palette to use if you’re painting Heresy-era Wolves.

FAQ

Who is the Primarch of the Space Wolves?

Leman Russ. He was raised among the tribal societies of Fenris, and his personality shaped the Legion into the brash, glory-hungry force it became.

Why don’t the Space Wolves follow the Codex Astartes?

They never have. Instead of ten standard companies they’re organised into twelve Great Companies, each with its own Wolf Lord and its own way of doing things.

What happened to the Wolf Brothers?

They were the second Chapter created when the VI Legion was split after the Horus Heresy. Gene-seed mutation wrecked them and they were disbanded, which is why the Space Wolves have no lasting successors.

What’s the Space Wolves’ battle cry?

“For Russ and the Allfather”, though a feral howl works just as well.
