The Tempestus Scions are the Astra Militarum’s elite shock troops, the best soldiers the Guard can field. They drop from the sky into fortified positions, hit hard, and rarely come back in one piece.
What the tempestus scions actually are
They’re the Guard’s special operations arm: commandos trained for deep strike assaults, reconnaissance, and infiltration behind enemy lines. When a mission is too brutal or too precise for ordinary Guardsmen, the Scions get the call.
They answer to the Departmento Munitorum through the Militarum Tempestus, rather than to a normal regiment’s chain of command. That independence is a big part of why they can be sent anywhere, fast.
Training and temperament
Scions go through a brutal regime that pushes them to the peak of human ability. Their discipline is the point: they’ll carry out any order, no matter how inhumane, without hesitation.
They’re indoctrinated to value obedience and duty over self-preservation. Between missions they don’t really rest. Plugged into their masked helmets, they can go days without extra food or sleep, standing in a trance on their transport, dormant but still alert.
How they fight
Every Scion is trained in aerial grav-drop tactics, so they usually arrive by Valkyrie Assault Carrier or, for orbital insertions, Vyrtus-class dropships. Once they’re on the ground, they hit hard and move on.
Their standard kit is the Ryza-pattern hotshot lasgun and hotshot volley gun, backed up by Taurox Prime armoured vehicles and Valkyries for transport and fire support.
- Deep strike assaults into heavily fortified positions
- Reconnaissance and infiltration beyond enemy lines
- Spearheading attacks that regular Guardsmen can’t survive
Storm troopers, Scions, and everything in between
“Storm trooper” is the older, broader term for this kind of elite unit, and you’ll still see it used. Tempestus Scions are the Militarum Tempestus version, but plenty of regiments field their own equivalents.
Kasrkin, Death Korps Grenadiers, and Steel Legion storm troopers are all cut from similar cloth, and the Inquisition keeps its own storm troopers too. So if a source says “storm trooper,” check which flavour it means.
| Type | Who they belong to |
|---|---|
| Tempestus Scions | Militarum Tempestus / Departmento Munitorum |
| Kasrkin | Cadian regiments |
| Death Korps Grenadiers | Death Korps of Krieg |
| Inquisitorial storm troopers | The Inquisition |
Why they matter
Scions are the Imperium’s answer to problems that need a scalpel, not a hammer. A Guard regiment can hold a line, but it can’t reliably drop into a hive spire, kill a target, and vanish.
They’re also a reminder of what the Imperium asks of its soldiers. Their obedience is total, and so is the cost. The Tempestus Aquilons are a newer variation on the same idea, but the core role hasn’t changed.

FAQ
Are Tempestus Scions Space Marines?
No. They’re ordinary humans, just trained and equipped far beyond a standard Guardsman. No gene-seed, no power armour, just skill, discipline, and very good gear.
What’s the difference between Scions and storm troopers?
Storm trooper is the broad term for elite Guard infantry. Tempestus Scions are the Militarum Tempestus branch specifically, though many regiments have their own storm trooper equivalents.
How do Scions get to the battlefield?
Usually by Valkyrie Assault Carrier, or from orbit in Vyrtus-class dropships. They’re all trained in grav-drop tactics, so arriving from the air is standard.
