The Tenth Black Crusade

The Tenth Black Crusade was Abaddon the Despoiler’s strike into the Helica Sector in 001.M39, fought mainly against the Iron Hands at Medusa. It’s remembered less for conquest than for the alliance it forged and the intelligence it gave Abaddon for later wars.

What the tenth black crusade actually was

It’s also called the Conflict of Helica, named for the sector spinward of the Eye of Terror where the fighting took place. Abaddon launched it in 001.M39, and it pitted his Black Legion and their Iron Warriors allies against the Imperium.

The outcome is usually listed as a Chaos retreat. Medusa held, but that’s only half the story, because Abaddon walked away with something he valued more than a quick win.

The deal with Perturabo

Abaddon needed a way past the Cadian Gate, the fortified corridor that keeps Chaos fleets bottled up. He got it by cutting a deal with Perturabo, the Daemon Primarch of the Iron Warriors.

In exchange for Abaddon settling an old grudge against the Iron Hands, Perturabo opened an ancient Warp route out of the Eye of Terror. The passage was calculated over months by a chain of enslaved cogitators, and it let the Despoiler’s fleet slip past the Gate’s layered defences into the Helica Sector.

Perturabo is listed as a non-combatant, so he opened the door rather than leading troops himself. The Iron Warriors still fought in the campaign.

How the campaign played out

Abaddon ran the same trick he’s used before: a feint. He sent the Black Legion fleet toward Thracian Primaris, Helica’s capital, while he went somewhere else entirely.

He also scattered his warlords across the sector. On scores of worlds, Traitor ships dropped from orbit and butchered Imperial citizens, which kept the Imperium reacting instead of concentrating.

Abaddon himself travelled with the Iron Warriors to Medusa, the Iron Hands’ home world, and watched from the Vengeful Spirit as they besieged it. The Iron Warriors burned the outer worlds of the Medusa System and tore down the loyalist defences piece by piece in a grinding war of attrition.

With their fortifications wrecked, the Iron Hands struggled to hold, but they bought enough time for their support companies to close in. Before the bulk of the Chapter and its allies arrived, Abaddon and the Iron Warriors pulled back, leaving hundreds of dead loyalist Space Marines behind.

  • Date: 001.M39
  • Location: Helica Sector, spinward of the Eye of Terror
  • Main target: Medusa, home world of the Iron Hands
  • Result: Chaos retreat, but Medusa’s defences were badly damaged
  • Notable detail: Abaddon learned a great deal about Medusa’s defences and the Iron Hands

Why it matters

Medusa survived, so it’s easy to file the Tenth Black Crusade away as a footnote. That misses the point.

The campaign gave Abaddon a working route around the Cadian Gate and a template for the kind of coalition warfare he’d lean on later. It also gave him detailed knowledge of the Iron Hands, their fortress world, and how they fight. He’d use all of it again.

For the Iron Hands, the lesson was harsher. Their outer defences were stripped and their Chapter bled, and their distrust of outside help only hardened afterward.
