The Deathleaper is a unique Tyranid Lictor created by Hive Fleet Leviathan, built not to win battles but to break minds. It’s the swarm’s terror weapon: a living nightmare that turns a planet’s defenders into a panicked rabble before the invasion even begins.
What the Deathleaper is
It’s a specialised Lictor, a bioform designed for infiltration and psychological warfare rather than open combat. Its purpose is to spread anxiety, confusion and dread, eroding the enemy’s will to fight.
Later lore describes the Deathleaper as the apex of the Lictor strain, capable of leading other vanguard organisms and hitting flanks with lightning-fast assaults after sowing terror behind the lines.
The terror campaign on St Caspalen
The Deathleaper first made its name on the Missionary World of St Caspalen. Watchguards and sentries began vanishing, only to be found days later with their brains removed, and the local PDF grew so jumpy that they coined the name ‘Deathleaper’ themselves.
As Hive Fleet Leviathan closed in, the creature reasoned that killing Cardinal Salem, the planet’s spiritual leader, would create a martyr and harden resistance. Instead it infiltrated the Cardinal’s cathedral-bunker and butchered his advisors in front of him, leaving Salem alive but soaked in their blood.
It repeated this for ten days, each time slipping past tightening security and coming within killing distance before withdrawing. The Cardinal descended into paranoia and madness, and St Caspalen’s morale collapsed. When Leviathan struck, the world was easy prey.
From one creature to a strain
The Deathleaper was introduced in the 4th edition Fall of Medusa V campaign as a Lictor strain with advanced chameleonic abilities, effectively invisible and seemingly present in every hive swarm on the planet.
In that older account, Hive Fleet Behemoth was heading to Medusa V to absorb the strain into its forces, and Ultramarines Sergeant Erasmus saw it as an evolutionary step. Imperial forces captured one, but it vanished, possibly escaping aboard a freighter.
Modern lore reframes the Deathleaper as a singular creation of Leviathan that has since become its own species. The two versions don’t quite line up, and GW hasn’t reconciled them.
Why it matters
The Deathleaper shows how the Tyranids fight on a psychological level. Killing a leader can create a martyr; breaking that leader’s mind can break a world.
It’s a rare example of a named, individual Tyranid with a personality of sorts, which makes it a memorable antagonist in a faction usually defined by its anonymity.

FAQ
Is the Deathleaper a single creature or a species?
Modern lore treats it as a unique Lictor that has since become its own species, the apex of the Lictor bioform. Older Medusa V background described it as a whole strain with many members.
Which hive fleet created the Deathleaper?
Hive Fleet Leviathan created it as a weapon of terror. The older Medusa V campaign instead linked the strain to Hive Fleet Behemoth, which wanted to absorb it.
Why didn’t the Deathleaper just kill Cardinal Salem?
Killing him would have made him a martyr and stiffened resistance. Breaking his mind did far more damage to St Caspalen’s morale.
