The Zeist Campaign

The Zeist Campaign was a late-41st-millennium war between the Imperium and the T’au Empire, fought across the Zeist Sector as the T’au Third Sphere of Expansion pushed into Imperial space. It’s remembered less for who won the shooting and more for who won the peace.

Why the campaign happened

By 997.M41, T’au expansion had started swallowing Imperial worlds outright. Two years later, planetary governors were screaming for reinforcements, but Hive Fleet Leviathan and a surge of activity from the Maelstrom had tied up most of the Imperium’s reserves.

Marneus Calgar was one of the few commanders who could actually spare anything. He sent the Ultramarines 2nd Company into the Zeist Sector to draw a hard line the T’au couldn’t cross, and put out calls to nearby Chapters for backup.

Sicarius takes the fight to the T’au

What the Ultramarines found was grim: some Imperial worlds abandoned, others fortified to the teeth against T’au lightning raids. Captain Cato Sicarius hit the Forge World Praetonis V first, breaking the T’au assault there and using that momentum to start pushing them back.

His method was to fight the T’au the way the T’au fight. Fast strikes on weak points to destabilise stronger ones, which happens to suit Space Marines perfectly. The expansion slowed, then stalled, until only Augura was left in T’au hands.

Augura and the end of the advance

By then the Ultramarines weren’t alone. Night Watch, Halo Dragons, Silver Skulls, Sable Swords, Crimson Fists, Iron Lords, Aurora Chapter, Eagle Warriors, Knights of the Raven and others had all joined the attack on Augura.

For all their battlesuits and advanced tech, the T’au couldn’t hold against that much massed Astartes force. Augura’s fortresses, shipyards and weapons factories were wrecked, and the T’au pulled back to defend their more secure territory.

  • Imperial tactical victory: the T’au advance was stopped and Augura was destroyed.
  • T’au strategic victory: Commander Shadowsun’s retreat was a feint, and she claimed a win elsewhere while Imperial forces were thin.
  • No follow-up: the Space Marine contingents were needed elsewhere, so Sicarius reluctantly handed defence back to the planetary governors.

How it fits into wider lore

The Zeist Campaign is one of the clearest examples of the Third Sphere of Expansion being checked, and it’s a signature moment for Sicarius as a commander rather than just a swordsman.

It also shows why the Imperium so often wins battles and loses wars. The forces that saved Zeist couldn’t stay, and Shadowsun’s withdrawal turned a defeat into a distraction that bought the T’au time somewhere that mattered more.
