Vulkan He’stan

Vulkan He’stan is the current Forgefather of the Salamanders, the Space Marine Chapter from the volcanic world of Nocturne. His whole job is one long quest: track down the nine lost artefacts of their primarch Vulkan, and he’s been at it for centuries.

Who he is

He’stan didn’t start out with that name. He was a captain of the Salamanders’ 4th Company for a century before the Chapter Council told him to set that aside and take up the role of Forgefather. When he did, he gave up his old name and became Vulkan He’stan.

He’s an Astartes, gene-son of the primarch Vulkan, and his active period runs from roughly M41 to the present day. He’s also a genuinely gifted smith, the kind whose work made master artificers stop and stare when he was still coming up.

The quest for the artefacts

The Forgefather’s mission is to recover the nine artefacts of Vulkan. His only guide is the Tome of Fire, a text that’s famously hard to read, let alone act on.

He works system by system, following rumours and fragments. One perk of the role: he isn’t limited to his old 4th Company. He can call on any Salamanders he needs, and they’re usually glad to help, even if it’s just on the chance that a piece of their history turns up.

  • Recovering Vulkan’s Sigil took him into the webway and a Dark Eldar city, alongside Herculon Praetor and the Firedrakes.
  • He fought Trazyn the Infinite in personal combat in 878.M41 and again during the Tochran Crusade in 943.M41, beating the Necron warlord both times.
  • After the Great Rift opened, many think the quest is now impossible. He’stan reads it differently: a test from Vulkan to temper his sons before the primarch returns.
  • He later travelled to Zero with the Hammers of Nocturne and Covenant of Fire, hunting a lead on the Unbound Flame, and ran into an Alpha Legion infiltration.

Why he matters

He’stan is the living link between the Salamanders and their missing primarch. The artefacts aren’t just relics; they’re the Chapter’s best hope of understanding what Vulkan left behind.

He’s also one of the few Salamanders who operates far from Nocturne for long stretches, which makes him a rare window into how the Chapter works beyond its homeworld.

Has he beaten Trazyn the Infinite?

Yes, twice in personal combat, in 878.M41 and again during the Tochran Crusade in 943.M41, after Trazyn tried to claim the artefacts for himself.
