Kroot Shapers

Kroot Shapers are the leaders and evolutionary guides of the Kroot, a carnivorous xenos race that fights for the T’au Empire and as mercenaries. They decide what their kindred eats, shaping future generations, and they lead from the front in battle.

What a Shaper does

Shapers command individual Kroot kindreds, much like a sergeant leads a squad. They’re also responsible for the kindred’s evolution: by directing what the Kroot consume, they control which genetic traits get passed on. Want tougher warriors? Have them eat Orks. Want speed? Hunt Eldar.

Beyond battlefield command, Shapers are the spiritual heart of the kindred. They lead ancestor worship and perform rituals that grant supernatural abilities. They also have an instinctive understanding of any foe they’ve personally devoured.

Types of Shaper

The most common specialization is the Flesh Shaper, a master of ritual butchery who ensures only the best genetic material is absorbed. War Shapers are seasoned commanders who lead all Kroot forces in the field, armed with bladestaves, prey-hooks, dart-bows, or tri-blades.

Larger kindreds are usually led by a Master Shaper. When multiple kindreds band together, a Shaper Council of three to five Kroot oversees them, making sure no Shaper pushes their warriors down a dangerous evolutionary path. In emergencies, a Shaper Chief can unite hundreds of kindreds into a single army.

  • Flesh Shaper: directs consumption and genetic selection.
  • War Shaper: battlefield commander of all Kroot in a war zone.
  • Trail Shaper: guides the kindred’s path and hunting grounds.
  • Pact Shaper: handles dealings with other races, especially the T’au.
  • Asphodel Shaper: rare specialists tied to specific genetic lines.

Powers and rituals

Shapers channel their kindred’s ancestors through shamanistic practices. They keep fetish pouches filled with powders, rocks, and bones, and use chants to invoke abilities. Ancestral Blessing calls warrior spirits to aid allies. Blood of the Stalker involves daubing hunters with a predator’s blood for luck. Prophetic Dream grants visions of the future, though they’re often cryptic.

Why Shapers matter

Without Shapers, the Kroot would lose their evolutionary edge and their spiritual cohesion. They’re the reason Kroot can adapt to new enemies so quickly, and they’re the glue that holds kindreds together. In T’au service, they’re the ones who decide how much of the Greater Good to accept, and how much to keep for the kindred.
