The Arco-flagellants

The Arco-flagellants are heretics who’ve been spared execution and turned into living weapons instead. The Ecclesiarchy sentences them to arco-flagellation, a brutal process that fuses weapons into their bodies and leaves them as frenzied berserkers who only calm down when a trigger word shuts their minds off again.

What arco-flagellation actually is

Arco-flagellation is a punishment for heresy that isn’t bad enough to earn an immediate death. The Ecclesiarchy orders it, but the Adeptus Mechanicus carries out the work. The idea is that the heretic’s suffering purges the sin from their soul, so when they finally die they can still strengthen the Emperor.

The process involves heavy surgery and mental reconditioning. The prisoner gets weapons built into their body, things like cutting claws, pneu-mattocks and electro-flails. A sealed pacifier helm is fitted over their head, with implants running into the cerebrum and spinal cord.

The pacifier helm and trigger words

With the helm active, the Arco-flagellant stays calm and barely conscious. Their subconscious is flooded with sacred images and verses: Ecclesiarchy symbols, pictures of Saints, and looping hymnals and prayers.

A trigger word shuts the helm down, releasing the inhibitors and letting the full fury out. A different trigger word switches it back on, and the Arco-flagellant goes passive again. That control is the only thing keeping them useful rather than just dangerous.

How they fight

Once unleashed, an Arco-flagellant is close to unstoppable. Combat drugs and painkillers flood their system, so they shrug off wounds that would drop anyone else. The Ecclesiarchy’s fighting forces use them in suicide attack units.

Most don’t last long. The few who survive multiple battles are called Endurant, judged to have earned a measure of redemption from the God-Emperor. They fight harder than the rest, usually first into the blood and often the last one standing.

  • Deployed in packs alongside armies of the faithful.
  • The Sisters of Battle tend to use them sparingly, except the Order of the Valorous Heart, who take inspiration from the suffering of their Arco-flagellant kill-throngs.
  • An Inquisitor can request or demand that a Cardinal hand a few over. Bloody-minded Inquisitors like them precisely because they don’t care about collateral damage.

Seraphs: the Inquisition’s higher order

Seraphs are a higher order of Arco-flagellant used by the Inquisition. They’re built from the rare individuals who carry the Pariah Gene, which makes them useful against the warp.

They serve as bodyguards and weapons for their masters, wearing red robes woven with something the source cuts off before finishing. What’s clear is that they’re a step above the standard Arco-flagellant in both purpose and rarity.
