The Bike Squad

The Bike Squad is a Space Marine close support unit mounted on bikes, built for speed, reconnaissance, and hitting enemy lines before they can react. It’s one of the fastest ways a Chapter projects power across a battlefield.

What a bike squad does

Bike Squads handle reconnaissance, flanking, and breakthrough missions. They can outrun most enemy formations and strike where the line is thinnest, then pull back before a counterattack lands.

They often work alongside Scout Squads or Land Speeder flights, though they’re perfectly capable of operating alone. In Codex-compliant Chapters, every Assault Marine and Scout learns to ride a bike, and the entire 6th Company is trained for it.

Squad size and weapons

A typical squad is a Sergeant plus two to seven bikers, with the option of an Attack Bike carrying two more Marines. That gives you a flexible unit that can stay small and nimble or bulk up for heavier firepower.

Bikers carry bolt pistols or chainswords and grenades as standard. Some swap their pistol for a flamer, grav-gun, meltagun, or plasma gun, and the Sergeant can take a power weapon or combi weapon. The Attack Bike mounts a heavy bolter or multi-melta on its sidecar.

How Chapters differ

Not every Chapter follows the Codex Astartes, so bike usage varies. The Dark Angels’ 2nd Company, the Ravenwing, is entirely mounted on bikes, Attack Bikes, and Land Speeders.

The Salamanders field bikes only in their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Companies because their companies are larger. The Space Wolves keep bikes rare, with only a few Swiftclaws riding them, since it’s seen as a headstrong way to fight.

The White Scars are the opposite: they’re famous for mass bike use, a habit shaped by the open plains of their home world, Mundus Planus.

Why it matters

Speed is the Bike Squad’s whole point. Roboute Guilliman himself warned that speed without direction is worthless, and that a biker should stay fluid rather than rigid.

On the tabletop and in lore, that translates to a unit that pressures flanks, grabs objectives, and punishes armies that can’t keep up. It’s a staple of any fast-moving Space Marine force.
