The Blood Angels Omnibus

The Blood Angels Omnibus is a 2008 Black Library collection that gathers James Swallow’s first two Blood Angels novels into one 640-page paperback. It’s the book that introduced a lot of readers to Sanguinius’s sons, and it’s still the starting point for the Arkio and Rafen storyline.

What’s inside the blood angels omnibus

Published on 6th June 2008, the omnibus brings together Deus Encarmine and Deus Sanguinius, along with the short story Blood Debt. The cover art is by Clint Langley, and the whole thing runs to 640 pages.

It also includes the Appendix Angelus, a ‘minipedia’ of terms, characters, places, items and factions from the stories. That extra is exclusive to this volume, so you won’t find it in the separate novel releases.

  • Deus Encarmine (novel)
  • Blood Debt (short story)
  • Deus Sanguinius (novel)
  • Appendix Angelus (exclusive minipedia)

The story: Arkio, Rafen and a schism in the Chapter

The plot kicks off on Cybele, where the Blood Angels are losing ground to Chaos. Battle-brother Arkio leads a counter-attack that turns the tide, and people start whispering that he’s blessed by Sanguinius.

Then Arkio goes further. He claims to be a reincarnation of the Primarch and demands loyalty: follow me or die. His brother Rafen swears an oath, but he doesn’t believe it, and he knows the two of them are heading for a reckoning only one will walk away from.

Where it sits in the Blood Angels series

This is the first omnibus in the Blood Angels series. Black Library followed it with Blood Angels: The Second Omnibus, so if you’re reading in order, this is where you start.

It’s worth knowing that ‘Blood Angels Omnibus’ isn’t a single book. Black Library has reused the naming pattern for other collections, and they’re very different products.

Why it matters

For a lot of fans, this was the entry point into Blood Angels fiction. Swallow’s Arkio storyline digs into the Chapter’s faith, its relationship with Sanguinius, and how quickly devotion can curdle into heresy.

It also sets up themes the Blood Angels books keep coming back to: the Flaw, the Black Rage, and the question of what the sons of Sanguinius owe their dead father.

FAQ

Do I need to read anything before the blood angels omnibus?

No. It’s designed as a starting point and collects the first two novels in the series, so you can jump straight in.

Is the Appendix Angelus in other editions?

No. The minipedia is exclusive to this omnibus, so you won’t find it in the standalone Deus Encarmine or Deus Sanguinius releases.

Is this the same as Lords of Blood or Sons of Sanguinius?

No. Those are separate omnibuses with different authors and contents. Lords of Blood is Guy Haley’s Dante collection, and Sons of Sanguinius is a multi-author anthology.
