The Codex Astartes

The Codex Astartes is the foundational doctrine of most Space Marine Chapters. Written by Roboute Guilliman after the Horus Heresy, it shapes how Chapters organise, fight, and even worship.

What the Codex Astartes is

The Codex Astartes is a vast tome covering every aspect of Space Marine warfare and organisation. It ranges from unit markings and squad tactics to planetary assault and strategic supply.

It’s more than a military manual. For many Chapters, it’s a holy text, and for the Ultramarines and their successors, it’s followed without question.

Why it was written

After the Horus Heresy, the loyalist Legions were split into smaller, autonomous Chapters. Guilliman wrote the Codex to give them a shared structure and prevent any one commander from wielding Legion-sized power again.

The High Lords of Terra and surviving Primarchs feared a repeat of the Heresy. The Codex was part of the solution: a blueprint for a decentralised, self-sufficient Adeptus Astartes.

Who follows it

Chapters that adhere to the Codex are called Codex Chapters. The Ultramarines are the strictest, but many others follow its teachings with varying degrees of flexibility.

Some Chapters, like the Space Wolves and Black Templars, pay it little more than lip service and stick to their own traditions. A few, such as the Flesh Tearers, deviate due to their unique flaws.

The Codex has even been adapted for mortal troops, like the Ultramar Defence Auxilia, though its core tactics remain the same.

How it shapes a Chapter

The Codex lays out a standard organisation: ten companies, each with a specific role. It also defines ranks from Neophyte to Chapter Master, and specialisations like Librarians, Chaplains, and Apothecaries.

It dictates tactics too, from combat squad splits to the use of vehicles and Dreadnoughts. Ultramarines memorise whole sections, so a company collectively holds the entire text.

  • Ten companies: Veteran, Battle, Reserve, and Scout.
  • Ranks: Neophyte, Battle-Brother, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Chapter Master.
  • Specialists: Librarian, Chaplain, Techmarine, Apothecary.
  • Tactics: combat squads, planetary assault, supply and marking conventions.
