The Cryptus System

The Cryptus System is a binary star system in Ultima Segmentum, better known as the Cryptan Shield. It mattered because it stood between Hive Fleet Leviathan and Baal, the Blood Angels’ homeworld. When it fell in 998.M41, the Chapter had to fight for its life.

What the Cryptus System is

It’s a twin-sun Imperial system in Ultima Segmentum, close to the Red Scar. That’s a nasty patch of space full of blood-red stars whose light hurts bare skin, and it’s known for slow settlement and high crime.

Its nickname, the Cryptan Shield, comes from its job: soaking up any invasion aimed at Baal. The system was rich in minerals, twin-sun energy, and people, which made it worth holding.

The worlds of Cryptus

Almost every world was hostile, so the only life there in real numbers was stubborn Humanity. From the nomads of Lysios to the crowded city of Phodia on Asphodex, people adapted and even thrived.

The system had nine notable celestial objects, including two asteroid belts and a lunar planetoid.

The Cryptus Campaign

In 998.M41, Hive Fleet Leviathan hit the system. The Imperial fleet lost the void battle in hours, and every planet became a target. It ended as a pyrrhic Imperial victory: the Tyranids were bled badly, but Cryptus was devastated.

Chapter Master Dante led the defence with the Blood Angels’ 1st and 2nd Companies, the bulk of the Flesh Tearers, millions of Imperial Guard, the Order of the Sacred Rose, Tempestus Scions, and the Imperial Navy. The Necrons of the Mephrit Dynasty also showed up, with Overlord Zarathusa and Anrakyr the Traveler.

  • Imperial commanders: Dante, Gabriel Seth, General Maelon Dhrost, Canoness Magda Grace (KIA), Sister Superior Amity Hope, Captain Donatos Aphael
  • Tyranid leader: the Hive Mind
  • Losses: Imperium extremely heavy, Tyranids heavy, Necrons light

Why it matters to Baal

Dante already knew Baal’s defences might not be enough. If Cryptus fell, the floodgates opened for an unstoppable Tyranid push on the Blood Angels’ homeworld.

He went to shore up the shield if possible, and to fight the Cryptoid Tendril directly if not. The campaign bought time and blood, but it couldn’t save the system.
