The Fire Raptor is a Space Marine attack gunship built on the Storm Eagle frame, stripped of transport space and packed with guns instead. It’s one of the heaviest flyers a Chapter can field, and a rare one at that.
What the fire raptor actually is
Take a Storm Eagle, rip out the seats, and fill the empty space with ammunition. That’s the Fire Raptor in a nutshell. It trades the ability to carry troops for the ability to keep firing, which is why it’s classed as a gunship rather than a transport.
Its main punch comes from twin-linked Avenger bolt cannons. On top of that, it carries a pair of waist-mounted ball turrets that can each track and engage targets on their own, plus wing-mounted Hellstrike missiles. The turrets can be fitted with reaper batteries, quad heavy bolters, or lascannons depending on the loadout.
Why it matters
The Fire Raptor is old. It dates back to the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy, when the Legiones Astartes flew them in numbers. Then it basically disappeared from Imperial arsenals for thousands of years.
Now it’s showing up again in the 41st Millennium, and in growing numbers. Nobody’s confirmed where they’re coming from, but the usual explanation is that some Forge World or Chapter forge has finally got its hands on a complete Fire Raptor STC. A few Chapters still keep original Great Crusade-era airframes as relics.
It’s also still flown by Chaos Space Marine warbands. Those examples are just as old, and a lot of them have picked up daemonic corruption along the way.
Who fields them
A fair number of Chapters in M41 have old Fire Raptors preserved from the Heresy. The Charnel Guard are known to keep a large fleet of them.
Others, like the Minotaurs and Star Phantoms, reportedly group them into strike formations of one Fire Raptor backed by three Storm Eagles. That mix is built to blast a corridor through even heavy enemy resistance so the ground forces behind it can push through.
- Charnel Guard: large fleet of preserved Fire Raptors
- Minotaurs and Star Phantoms: formations of one Fire Raptor plus three Storm Eagles
- Chaos warbands: Great Crusade-era airframes, often daemonically corrupted
Fire raptor vs storm eagle
The two share a chassis, so the difference comes down to what you want the airframe doing. The Storm Eagle moves troops and supports them. The Fire Raptor gives up that job entirely to hit harder and keep hitting.

- Dates back to the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy, then largely vanished for several thousand years
- Fielded again in growing numbers in M41, likely thanks to a rediscovered STC
- Used by loyalist Chapters like the Charnel Guard, Minotaurs, and Star Phantoms, and by Chaos warbands
FAQ
Is the Fire Raptor a transport?
No. It’s built on the Storm Eagle but sacrifices all transport capacity to store more ammunition. It’s a pure gunship.
Why are Fire Raptors so rare in the 41st Millennium?
They vanished from Imperial arsenals for thousands of years after the Horus Heresy. Their reappearance suggests someone has found a complete STC, though it’s never been confirmed who.
Do Chaos Space Marines use the Fire Raptor?
Yes. Chaos warbands still fly Great Crusade-era Fire Raptors, and many of those craft are daemonically corrupted.
