Blood Claws are the Space Wolves’ newest and most reckless warriors, serving as the chapter’s first and lowest rank after basic training. Instead of becoming Scouts like recruits in Codex chapters, they’re thrown straight into assault packs to learn combat by surviving it.
What a Blood Claw is
A Blood Claw is the entry rank a Space Wolf holds once he finishes basic training. Codex chapters typically send fresh Neophytes out as Scouts to sneak and snipe while they grow into full battle-brothers. The Space Wolves do the opposite, sending new recruits directly into the front lines because they believe real combat teaches faster than any firing range.
This rank is meant to be short. You either learn fast, survive, and get promoted to Grey Hunter, or you don’t. The Wolves treat the heavy attrition as a filter rather than a tragedy, a process that separates the men from the boys and weeds out anyone too weak, too slow, or too unlucky to advance. Some sources also use the alternate title Blooded Claw for this same rank.
The job itself is simple: charge, survive, and earn a place among the Grey Hunters. Blood Claws are thrilled to have joined the legendary Sky Warriors, eager to build their own sagas, and convinced they can’t be killed. That combination produces a berserk charge with genuine battle-swinging force, along with a casualty rate that would make a veteran wince.
- First and lowest rank in the Space Wolves, held right after basic training
- Serves as assault troops instead of Scouts, unlike Codex chapter Neophytes
- Also called Blooded Claw in some sources
How they fight
A Blood Claw pack usually runs between 5 and 15 marines. Numbers drop fast, and the Wolves are fine with that. Each pack is led by a senior Wolf, often a Grey Hunter or a Wolf Guard, whose job is to keep their worst impulses in check and spot the ones with real potential.
That leadership matters because Blood Claws take risks that would be suicidal even for a Space Marine. Their charges can turn a battle, but the cost is brutal. Packs function as blunt instruments, and that’s the point. They’re the chapter’s future and its casualty list at the same time.
Wargear and specialists
Once a Blood Claw finishes his transformation into a full Space Marine, he’s issued power armour, a chainsword, a bolt pistol, and frag and krak grenades. That’s close to what a Codex Assault Squad carries.
One Blood Claw per pack, or up to two in a pack of 15, can take a special weapon or upgrade. The options include a flamer, melta gun, plasma gun, plasma pistol, power weapon, or power fist.
- Standard kit: power armour, chainsword, bolt pistol, frag and krak grenades
- Special options: flamer, melta gun, plasma gun, plasma pistol, power weapon, or power fist
- Allocation: one per pack, or two in a pack of fifteen
Where reckless veterans go
Some Blood Claws never outgrow their reckless streak. Rather than forcing them into a standard Grey Hunter role, the chapter hands them to units that reward their love of speed and charging. Skyclaw assault packs take the ones who want jump packs, while Swiftclaw bike squadrons take the ones who just want speed.
Known Blood Claws include Lukas the Trickster and Drenn Redblade.
Blood Claws and Primaris Marines
When Primaris Space Marines joined the chapter, many Blood Claws reacted with outright violence, violently confronting the new warriors. The Space Wolves had to set up a ritual where unarmed combatants could settle their aggression without killing each other.
Despite that friction, Blood Claws have been seen serving as Assault Intercessors, which fits their temperament perfectly.

FAQ
What’s the difference between a Blood Claw and a Grey Hunter?
Blood Claws are the rawest recruits, sent into battle as assault troops to learn by fighting. Grey Hunters are the next step up, more experienced and disciplined. A Blood Claw who survives long enough and shows promise gets promoted.
Are Blood Claws the same as Scouts?
No. Codex chapters use Neophytes as Scouts, but the Space Wolves skip that stage and put their new recruits straight into assault packs as Blood Claws.
How many Blood Claws are in a pack?
A typical pack has 5 to 15 marines. They take heavy casualties, so the numbers drop fast.
Can Blood Claws use special weapons?
Yes. One Blood Claw per pack, or up to two in a pack of 15, can carry a flamer, melta gun, plasma gun, plasma pistol, power weapon, or power fist.
How does a Blood Claw become a Grey Hunter?
By surviving long enough to prove he can fight with some discipline. Packs are led by a senior Wolf who watches for who’s ready and reports on their progress.
What happens to Blood Claws who never calm down?
They usually get moved to Skyclaw assault packs or Swiftclaw bike squadrons, where their love of speed and charging is an asset rather than a problem.
