Librarian

A Librarian is a Space Marine who carries the psychic mutation and has been trained to control it. They’re the Chapter’s battle-psykers, its long-range communicators, and the people who keep its history and traditions from being lost. Not every Space Marine is a psyker, but those who are become some of the most versatile and dangerous warriors in a Chapter.

What a Librarian does

On the battlefield, a Librarian unleashes devastating psychic attacks, shields and enhances their brothers, and reads the minds of enemies. Off it, they handle interstellar psychic communications, sending and receiving messages across the stars, and they maintain the Chapter’s archives.

Librarians are also the Chapter’s historians. They study and preserve the Chapter’s past, which means they often know more about its traditions and secrets than anyone else. They advise the Chapter Master on matters of history and custom, and the Chief Librarian sits on the Chapter’s senior command.

History and origins

The first Space Marine battle-psykers were the Host of Pentacles of the Dark Angels Legion during the Unification Wars. That early experiment ended badly and was abandoned after grim calamities.

Battle-psykers returned during the Great Crusade. Magnus the Red, Sanguinius, and Jaghatai Khan championed the Librarian program, and the Emperor sanctioned it as a way to control the random emergence of psychic powers among the Legions.

Not every Primarch agreed. Mortarion and Leman Russ accused Magnus of sorcery, and the argument came to a head at the Council of Nikaea. The Emperor’s decree banned psychic powers in the Legions and disbanded the Librarius. The decision didn’t stick. The Burning of Prospero and the near-destruction of the Thousand Sons, followed by the Horus Heresy, changed everything, and Librarians were eventually reinstated.

Ranks and structure

Librarians are organised into the Librarius, a Chapter department that trains and oversees them. The hierarchy reflects both psychic mastery and experience, with each step carrying greater power and responsibility.

The Chief Librarian leads the entire Librarius and advises the Chapter Master. Below them come Epistolaries, senior battle-psykers skilled in communications; Codiciers, full Librarians who record Chapter history; Lexicani, junior Librarians still in training; and Acolytum, apprentices learning to control their powers.

Chapter variations

Not all Chapters call their psykers Librarians or organise them the same way. The Space Wolves have Rune Priests, who insist their powers come from Fenris itself rather than the Warp. The Blood Ravens have an unusually high number of Librarians and a strong psychic tradition. The Dark Angels keep theirs close, often hiding deeper secrets.

Attitudes vary just as much. Some Chapters distrust or barely tolerate their Librarians. Others, like the Thousand Sons before their fall, were the most psychically gifted Legion of all and embraced their psykers completely.

Primaris Librarians

When the Primaris Space Marines arrived, so did Primaris Librarians. They’re bigger and stronger, with the enhanced physiology of their kind, and they’re trained in the same psychic disciplines. They bring new wargear and a fresh outlook to the Librarius.

Most Chapters welcomed them. Some traditionalists took time to adjust, but Primaris Librarians have become formidable psykers on the modern battlefield.
