The Illuminati

The Illuminati are a secret society in Warhammer 40k that even the Emperor doesn’t know about. Every member survived being possessed by a daemon, and they’ve spent millennia plotting to bring the Emperor back from the brink of death.

What makes someone Illuminati

You don’t get recruited into the Illuminati. You become one by surviving something that should’ve killed you. A daemon takes over your body, and through sheer willpower you force it out again. Most daemonhosts don’t survive that. Their minds either break or get shoved aside while the daemon drives.

The few who cast the daemon out end up changed. They’ve shared a mind with a Chaos entity, so they understand Chaos from the inside. That understanding makes them immune to its temptations. They’ve already beaten it once.

What they actually want

The Illuminati’s only real goal is keeping humanity alive. They’ve seen what happened to the Eldar, and they’re terrified of the same thing happening to mankind.

Their solution is grim: they plan to resurrect the Emperor. They believe His mind is fragmenting, and when His will finally breaks, humanity falls to Chaos. So they intend to sacrifice the Sensei, the Emperor’s own descendants, at that exact moment to fuel His rebirth as the Sensei-Emperor, who’ll lead humanity directly again.

This plan is kept from everyone. If the Emperor knew, He might just let Himself die. If the Sensei knew, they probably wouldn’t volunteer.

How they operate

They work from the shadows, nudging events to prepare for the Emperor’s return. A big part of that is finding and protecting the Sensei from the Inquisition, which would rather see them dead.

Because they share an enemy in Chaos, the Illuminati often work with the Eldar, especially the Harlequins. They’re among the very few humans allowed into the Black Library.

  • They influence Imperial policy by interpreting the Emperor’s will to suit their goals
  • They hide the Sensei from Inquisitorial purges
  • They maintain ties with the Eldar and Harlequins
  • The Ordo Malleus considers them dangerous heretics and wants them wiped out

Why the Inquisition hunts them

The Ordo Malleus knows the Illuminati exist, and they don’t buy the story about saving humanity. From the Inquisition’s view, anyone who’s been possessed by a daemon is tainted, and anyone plotting to kill the Emperor’s descendants is a heretic.

The Illuminati also worry that the Ordo Malleus might be right about one thing: their plan could be subtly influenced by Chaos without them realizing it.

FAQ

Are the Illuminati canon in Warhammer 40k?

They appear in older 40k lore, mainly the Inquisition War novels and Realm of Chaos books. Modern 40k rarely mentions them, so they’re semi-forgotten but still technically part of the background.

Who are the Sensei?

The Sensei are the Emperor’s descendants, said to be immortal and invisible to Chaos. The Illuminati protect them because they need them as sacrifices for the Emperor’s rebirth.

How are the Illuminati different from the Inquisition?

The Inquisition serves the Emperor as He is now. The Illuminati think He’s dying and plan to bring Him back in a new form, which the Inquisition sees as heresy.
