The Kâhl

A Kâhl is a war leader of the Leagues of Votann, the Kin’s answer to a general. They pick out the deadliest enemies on the field, mark them with the Eye of the Ancestors, and make sure those foes get the full attention of the Kin.

What a Kâhl actually does

The title covers a lot of ground. Kin language is plain and broad, so Kâhl gets applied to expeditionary commanders across several ranks of the military hierarchy. Whatever their official station, their own warriors just call them Kâhl in battle.

Every Kâhl is picked from the Leagues’ most skilled and dependable fighters, and they answer only to their Kindred’s ruling Votannic Council. They’re known for staying calm under pressure and reading a battlefield fast.

Their signature job is casting the Eye of the Ancestors over the most dangerous enemies the Oathband faces. That marks those foes as priority targets, and they’re the first to feel the Kin’s wrath.

Types of Kâhl

The rank splits into several roles depending on what a given Kâhl is responsible for. The biggest distinction is between a Kâhl and a High Kâhl, who sits on the League’s Votannic Council and commands an entire Kindred’s armed forces.

Below that, Kâhls specialise by duty. Some run a whole warzone, some lead a single Oathband through its sworn oath, and some blur the line between general and elite warrior.

  • High Kâhl: promoted to the Votannic Council, commands a Kindred’s armed forces. Can command an Oathband while a regular Kâhl serves beneath them.
  • Battle Kâhl: oversees an entire warzone, including the military and industrial concerns inside it.
  • Oäthen Kâhl: leads a specific Oathband in fulfilling its oath.
  • Hearth Kâhl: mixes strategic command with membership in the Einhyr elite.
  • Hernkâhl: leads Hernkyn Prospects, sometimes in lighter void armour and jackets instead of the heavier standard kit.
  • Kâhl of the Reach: operates within Prospects under the Far-Scout Master.
  • Also attested: Kâhl of the Watch and Undr Kâhl.

Gear and armour

Kâhls go to war in Bastium Void Armour, layered with Rampart Crests and Shield Crests for extra protection. That’s a lot of metal for someone whose main job is standing back and picking targets, but Kin command doesn’t come cheap.

For weapons they carry a mix of Autoch-Pattern Combi-Bolters, Forgewrought Plasma Axes, Plasma Blades, Volkanite Disintegrators, and Mass Gauntlets.

Notable Kâhls

Several named Kâhls show up across Leagues lore. Ûthar the Destined is probably the best known, and the Iron Kâhl is another name that gets thrown around.

Others include Kôrv Grudgekeeper, Yôht Grendok, Vutred, Myrtun Dammergot, Fyrtor Hernkendersson, and Ugnÿr.
