The Multilaser

The multilaser is an Imperial laser weapon built for volume of fire. Instead of one hard punch, it throws a stream of laser bolts fast enough to chew through infantry squads and light vehicles, which is why you’ll find it bolted to half the Astra Militarum’s motor pool.

What the multilaser actually is

It’s a laser weapon with several reinforced barrels and beefed-up phase capacitors. Those capacitors let a standard laser discharge fire as a rapid series of bolts rather than a single shot.

The trade-off is deliberate. It gives up some of the lascannon’s armour-piercing punch in exchange for a rate of fire that can reach around 100 bolts a second, so it can switch between targets almost instantly.

Why it matters on the battlefield

The multilaser is an anti-infantry and anti-light-vehicle weapon. Against hordes or thin-skinned transports, that torrent of bolts does more work than a slower, heavier gun would.

It’s also cheap and easy to mount, which is the real reason it’s everywhere. The Chimera carries one as standard, and the Sentinel walker can take one too, giving Guard armoured formations a common, reliable weapon they don’t have to think too hard about.

  • Great against massed infantry and lightly-armoured targets
  • High rate of fire lets it sweep across several targets in quick succession
  • Less penetrative than a lascannon, so it struggles against heavy armour
  • Common on Chimera transports and Sentinel walkers

Variants and equivalents

The best-known variant is the Gravis multi-laser array, used by the Imperialis Militia. It’s the same idea scaled up for a militia formation rather than a standard Guard vehicle.

The Eldar have a direct counterpart in the scatter laser, which fills a similar rapid-fire anti-infantry role in their armies.

How it fits into Imperial doctrine

The multilaser isn’t a hero weapon. It’s a workhorse, and that’s the point. Guard commanders use it to keep infantry honest and to strip light armour while heavier guns deal with real threats.

If you’re building a Guard list or writing about one, the multilaser is the default answer for ‘what’s on the turret?’ It’s the most common laser weapon you’ll see on Imperial vehicles, and it shapes how those vehicles fight.

Key facts

  • The multilaser is an Imperial laser weapon with reinforced barrels and enhanced phase capacitors.
  • It fires a rapid series of bolts, reportedly up to 100 per second, rather than one powerful shot.
  • It trades penetration for rate of fire, so it’s best against infantry and light vehicles.
  • Standard armament on the Chimera transport and an option for the Sentinel walker.
  • The Eldar scatter laser is its closest equivalent in another faction’s arsenal.

FAQ

What is a multilaser in Warhammer 40k?

It’s an Imperial laser weapon with multiple barrels and enhanced capacitors, designed to fire a rapid stream of laser bolts instead of a single shot. It’s standard on many Astra Militarum vehicles.

What’s the difference between a multilaser and a lascannon?

The lascannon trades rate of fire for raw penetration, making it good against tanks. The multilaser does the opposite, firing much faster but with less punch, which makes it better against infantry and light vehicles.

Which units carry a multilaser?

The Chimera transport and the Sentinel walker are the classic carriers. The Imperialis Militia also field a variant called the Gravis multi-laser array.
