The Screaming Vortex is a colossal Warp storm that tears through the Koronus Expanse, separating the Calixis Sector from the lawless void beyond. It’s a realm of Chaos, where renegades, pirates, and madmen carve out their own domains, and its name comes from the haunting psychic screams that echo through the Immaterium.
Overview
The Screaming Vortex is one of two massive Warp storms that isolate the Calixis Sector from the Koronus Expanse. It’s a region where reality breaks down, and the laws of physics are warped by the raw stuff of the Immaterium. The Imperium knows little about what lies inside, and few who enter ever return.
Its origin is lost to legend, but a popular tale among the Vortex’s denizens says it formed from the ruins of Eldar worlds after the Fall. As the Eye of Terror erupted, the Vortex was born as a secondary storm, and it resonates with the tormented voices of the slain Eldar. Psykers outside can hear these screams, and within the storm, everyone does. When the storm wanes, the voices grow louder and more desperate.
- A massive Warp storm between the Calixis Sector and the Koronus Expanse.
- Named for the psychic screams of the dead that echo through it.
- Largely unexplored and unmapped by the Imperium.
Layout and regions
Mapping the Vortex is nearly impossible because the storm constantly shifts the relative positions of its worlds. Still, some regions are stable enough to be known. It’s broadly divided into three zones: the Gloaming Worlds, the Inner Ring, and the Lower Vortex. There are also notable locations like the 13th Station of Passage, Harrowed Space, the Tyrant Star, the Ragged Helix, and the Forbidden Portal.
- Gloaming Worlds: outer zone, relatively stable.
- Inner Ring: deeper region with its own dangers.
- Lower Vortex: innermost zone, least understood.
- Other sites: 13th Station of Passage, Harrowed Space, Tyrant Star, Ragged Helix, Forbidden Portal.
Who lives there?
The Vortex is home to a host of Chaos renegades, including Plague Marines, other veteran Chaos Space Marines, Warpsmiths, and sorcerer-kings. These warbands constantly fight each other for dominance, and their infighting keeps them from becoming a unified threat to the Imperium.
The world of Mire is known for its Death Priests and Plaguemeisters, who spread their foul blessings. Slavery and piracy are major industries, and conquest is difficult because the shifting storm makes holding territory a nightmare. A warlord might control a handful of worlds for a time, but never for long.

- Warpsmiths and sorcerer-kings.
- Death Priests and Plaguemeisters of Mire.

Why it matters
The Screaming Vortex is a festering wound in the Imperium’s side. If its warbands ever united, they could become a serious threat to the Calixis Sector. But the chaotic nature of the Vortex, both literal and figurative, keeps them divided. It’s a place of opportunity for renegades and a source of dread for Imperial citizens.
For players of the Warhammer 40,000 roleplaying games, the Vortex is a key setting in the Koronus Expanse, offering a sandbox of Chaos, danger, and dark adventure.
- A potential unified Chaos threat to the Imperium.
- A hub of piracy, slavery, and war.
- Central to the Koronus Expanse RPG setting.
