Asmodai

Asmodai is the Master Interrogator-Chaplain of the Dark Angels, the man the Chapter sends when a Fallen Angel needs to be found and broken. He’s one of the oldest and most successful of his kind, and easily one of the most sinister figures in the Unforgiven.

Who Asmodai is

Asmodai (say AZ-moh-digh) holds the title Master of Repentance. He’s an Astartes of the Dark Angels, gene-sons of Lion El’Jonson, and he’s been active from M41 right up to the present. Before his elevation he served as a Tactical Marine in the 8th Company.

His whole job is extracting confessions from the Fallen, the Dark Angels who turned on the Legion ten thousand years ago. He’s very, very good at it. He’s also infamous for being one of the darkest members of the Unforgiven, and suspected Fallen have reportedly decided it’s better to die than end up in his custody.

How he became an Interrogator-Chaplain

In 405.M41, during the Macharian Heresy, Asmodai was a solid but unremarkable Tactical Marine fighting under Captain Elijah at the battle of Hive-Moon Sigma. The Dark Angels took heavy losses there, and the renegade Dark Angel Malvine Rhemell got away. Asmodai swore he’d find Rhemell and make him repent.

He was promoted to Interrogator-Chaplain soon after. His first capture was a Fallen named Cephesus in 411.M41, though Cephesus wouldn’t break. Over the next 25 years Asmodai caught three more, and none of them repented either. His first real success came when Sorl Mebbon finally broke after 18 days of torture.

Reputation and methods

In his long career Asmodai has only managed to make two of the Fallen repent. That low number says less about his skill than about how stubborn the Fallen are. He’s rumoured to keep a victim alive for weeks while working on them, and his reputation for cruelty is bad enough that Supreme Grand Master Azrael has had to step in and cover up his excesses more than once.

He’s more than a torturer, though. He ordered the slaughter of recruits from Narcium over their poor answers to his questions, and he slapped a penance of silence on the entire 7th Company after hearing laughter in the halls of The Rock. At the same time he’s a genuinely effective commander who led the Dark Angels against the traitors of Rhun’s Palace and held a surrounded position against Daemons on Amity.
