Bjorn the Fell-Handed

Bjorn the Fell-Handed is a Space Wolves dreadnought who’s been alive since the Great Crusade, making him the oldest warrior in the Imperium. He fought beside Leman Russ, led the Chapter as Great Wolf, and now sleeps under the Fang until the Wolves need him again.

Who Bjorn is

Born on Fenris in the late 30th millennium, Bjorn served as a Wolf Guard in the 3rd Great Company and later as a member of Leman Russ’s personal guard. He earned the name Fell-Handed after losing his left hand in battle, replacing it with a weaponised prosthetic.

He was the first Great Wolf of the Space Wolves after Russ vanished into the Eye of Terror. When he finally fell in combat, his brothers entombed him in a dreadnought so he could keep fighting.

From the Great Crusade to the Horus Heresy

Imperial records first mention Bjorn near the end of the Great Crusade, when he saved conservator Kasper Hawser and two Fenrisians from a tribal dispute. One of those natives, Fith, later joined the Space Wolves, and Hawser became the company’s skjald.

Bjorn fought in the Olamic Quietude campaign, stood honour guard at Nikaea, and took part in the Burning of Prospero. At Nikaea he even drove off a figure who looked like Captain Amon of the Thousand Sons.

The Battle of the Fang and the Inquisition

Bjorn’s most famous later action was at the Battle of the Fang in M32, when he was awakened from his dreadnought slumber to help break the Thousand Sons’ siege of the Space Wolves’ fortress. He led the counterattack that saved the Chapter.

Centuries later, during the Months of Shame, he confronted the Inquisition and the Grey Knights over their treatment of civilians after the First War for Armageddon. His presence forced a truce, and the Space Wolves have never fully trusted the Inquisition since.

What Bjorn is like now

Bjorn spends most of his time in stasis beneath the Fang. The Space Wolves wake him only when the Chapter faces something truly dire, or when a new Great Wolf needs his counsel.

He’s not a mindless killing machine. Bjorn is sharp, blunt, and famously unimpressed by the Ecclesiarchy’s god-making. His line about the Emperor, that calling him a god is how the whole mess started, sums up his view nicely.
