Old One Eye is a Tyranid Carnifex that refuses to stay dead. Blasted, frozen, buried and hunted, it keeps coming back, and that makes it one of the most infamous individual monsters in Warhammer 40k.
What old one eye actually is
It’s a Carnifex, the living battering ram of the Tyranid swarms, but a unique one. Its body is a roadmap of wounds that should’ve killed it, and it regenerates from damage that would leave any other beast a corpse.
Instead of the usual bio-weapons, it carries a pair of massive crab-like claws. Those claws have torn open tanks, bunkers and anything else unlucky enough to be in reach.
The beast of Calth
Old One Eye first appeared around 745.M41, leading Hive Fleet Behemoth’s assault on Calth. It batted Leman Russ tanks aside like they were nothing until a forgotten Imperial hero put a plasma pistol shot through its eye and into its brain. That was the first time it died.
It didn’t stay that way. Decades later, after Behemoth had been driven off, smugglers found its frozen body in Calth’s ice packs and thawed it out, hoping for a bounty. Its wounds closed almost immediately. It woke up and killed them.
- Cut off from the Hive Mind, a Carnifex falls back on pure instinct: kill everything.
- Its rampage drew leftover Termagants and Genestealers to it as a dominant leader.
- Scout Sergeant Telion of the Ultramarines finally stopped it with a one-in-a-million shot into its ruined eye socket, sending it into a ravine.
- The body was never found.
Why it matters
Old One Eye’s regeneration was once treated as a freak mutation, maybe an experiment in rapid cell regrowth that the Hive Mind abandoned. Then Hive Fleet Leviathan arrived, and that same trait turned up on Carnifexes almost across the board.
That shift is the real reason the beast matters. It’s a living preview of where Tyranid evolution was heading, and a reminder that killing a Tyranid once doesn’t mean much.
Sightings and the legend
Officially, Old One Eye’s fate is unknown. Unofficially, Carnifexes matching its description keep turning up across Ultramar and beyond. If every story is true, it’s been killed more than a dozen times.
The most recent credible sighting came on Tartoros, during Leviathan’s push into the Cryptus System. An alpha Carnifex with the same scarred carapace ignored Cadian heavy weapons and smashed void shield generators protecting the world from solar storms. No Imperial soldier survived the encounter.
