Yarrick’s Bale Eye

Yarrick’s Bale Eye is the bionic eye of Commissar Sebastian Yarrick, and it doubles as a short-range laser weapon. It’s the reason Orks whisper that the Old Man can kill you just by looking at you.

What the bale eye actually is

It’s an optical implant that replaces Yarrick’s lost left eye. On top of letting him see, it fires a laser blast roughly as strong as a laspistol at close range, and he aims it with a rangefinder built into the setup.

So it’s more than a prosthetic. Yarrick can genuinely shoot someone with a glance, which is exactly the kind of thing that turns into legend among Orks.

Why the Orks are terrified of it

Ork camps spread the rumour that Yarrick could kill with a glance, and the Bale Eye is where that rumour comes from. For an Ork, a human who can kill you by looking at you is genuinely unsettling, and that fear does real work on the battlefield.

Sources differ on how it started. One version says the rumour grew out of Yarrick’s defence of Hades Hive against Warboss Ugulhard’s Waaagh!. Another says he lost the eye in later campaigns and deliberately leaned into the Orks’ fear by building a working ‘evil eye’ into the implant.

The names behind the legend

Yarrick is known by plenty of titles: the Hero of Hades Hive, the Old Man, and Old Bale Eye. That last one comes straight from the eye itself, and it stuck because the Orks took it seriously.

He’s one of the most storied warriors in the Astra Militarum, and his rivalry with Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka is a big part of why the Bale Eye matters. When your enemy is an Ork warlord, a weapon that plays on Ork superstition is worth more than its laser output suggests.

On the tabletop and in your collection

Classic Yarrick miniatures have come back on a Made to Order basis, including a resin version and the original 1990s metal model. Not all of these older characters have current rules, but they work fine as generic commanders and commissars, or just as painting projects.

If you’re hunting the older kit, keep an eye on when Made to Order windows open, because they don’t stick around long.

FAQ

Is Yarrick’s Bale Eye a real weapon?

Yes. It’s a bionic eye that also fires a laser, comparable to a laspistol at close range, and it’s aimed with a rangefinder.

Why do Orks call Yarrick ‘Old Bale Eye’?

Because of the eye itself. Ork camps believed Yarrick could kill with a glance, and the nickname grew out of that fear.

How did Yarrick lose his eye?

Sources disagree. One account ties the rumour to the defence of Hades Hive, while another says he lost the eye in later campaigns and chose to build a real ‘evil eye’ into the implant.
