The Battle of Istvaan V, better known as the Drop Site Massacre, was the ambush that shattered three loyalist Space Marine Legions in a single afternoon. It’s the moment the Horus Heresy stopped being a political crisis and became a war the Imperium might actually lose.
What happened at Istvaan V
By the time Horus picked Istvaan V as his command post, he’d already purged suspected loyalists from his own ranks at Istvaan III. The Emperor, still hoping to save his favourite son, sent seven full Legions to bring him down. What he didn’t know was that four of those Legions had already turned.
The first wave dropped straight into a prepared killing ground. Ferrus Manus led the Iron Hands into the centre, Vulkan’s Salamanders hit the left, and Corax’s Raven Guard took the right. The traitors they expected to fight were dug in behind fortifications built by Fulgrim’s Emperor’s Children, largely safe from orbital bombardment.
The trap springs
The numbers looked even enough: roughly 30,000 traitors against 40,000 loyalists. Then the second wave landed. The Night Lords, Iron Warriors, Word Bearers and Alpha Legion, all believed loyal, opened fire on the loyalists from behind.
Ferrus Manus met Fulgrim in single combat and lost his life. The three loyalist Legions were almost annihilated, with only scattered survivors escaping the planet. The Imperium lost three Legions’ worth of strength in one stroke, right when it could least afford it.
Why it matters
Istvaan V is where the Heresy turned. Before it, Horus had four Legions at his back. After it, he’d gutted three of the Emperor’s best and proven that loyalty meant nothing if the wrong brother was standing next to you.
The survivors carried the scars forever. The Iron Hands lost their Primarch and turned inward, the Salamanders and Raven Guard were reduced to shadows of their former strength, and the distrust between Legions never fully healed.

FAQ
Why is it called the Drop Site Massacre?
Because the loyalist Legions were massacred at their own landing zones. They dropped into a trap and were shot from behind by Legions they thought were on their side.
Which Legions fought at Istvaan V?
Seven Legions were sent by the Emperor, but four of them were secretly traitor. The Iron Hands, Salamanders and Raven Guard were the loyalists; the other four turned on them mid-battle.
Did anyone survive Istvaan V?
Yes, but only a handful. Small groups from all three loyalist Legions escaped, and those survivors shaped the Legions’ identities for the rest of the Heresy.
