The Battle of Sotha was a Horus Heresy battle fought around 009.M31 when Night Lords forces tried to seize the alien Pharos beacon on the planet Sotha. It mattered because that beacon held Imperium Secundus together, and losing it would have cut Roboute Guilliman’s hidden empire off from the wider galaxy.
Why Sotha was worth fighting over
Sotha sits in Ultima Segmentum, and during the Great Crusade it was brought into Ultramar. Mount Pharos turned out to be an ancient xenos structure, so Guilliman restricted the world and left the Ultramarines 199th Company to guard it.
By the Heresy, the Warsmith Barabas Dantioch had worked out how to use the Pharos. It acted as an empathic beacon, letting Imperium Secundus send messages and navigate without the Astronomican. That made a quiet agri-world suddenly strategic.
The Night Lords invasion
After the Thramas Crusade went badly for them, Night Lords fleet elements needed somewhere to regroup. Sevatar had marked Sotha as a mustering point, apparently without knowing what the planet had become.
Captain Krukesh the Pale arrived with a larger fleet, absorbed Gendor Skraivok and the Umber Prince into his force, and decided to take the Pharos for himself. He brought roughly 20,000 Night Lords against a much smaller loyalist garrison.
- Loyalist defenders: about 3,000 Ultramarines, 500 Dark Angels, 50 Imperial Fists, plus Shattered Legionaries, Thallax, two Thanatar battle-automata, and Ultramar Auxilia.
- Traitor commander: Lord Krukesh the Pale, killed in action.
- Other key Night Lords: Captain Gendor Skraivok and Claw Master Zaar Siakaar, also killed.
How the fighting played out
The Night Lords started with infiltration, then hit the Aegida platform in orbit. From there the battle spread to a full planetary assault and a brutal defence of Sothopolis, the main settlement.
A relief force finally broke through and turned the tide. Alexis Polux of the Imperial Fists led the loyalist counter-attack, and Warsmith Dantioch died during the battle. The Night Lords were almost entirely killed or scattered, and their invasion fleet was mostly destroyed. The Nightfall escaped.
| Outcome | Detail |
|---|---|
| Result | Loyalist victory |
| Loyalist losses | 947 Ultramarines killed, all Dark Angels killed |
| Traitor losses | Almost all Night Lords killed or fled, fleet mostly destroyed |
Aftermath and later history
Sotha stayed important. The Ultramarines 199th Company became the Scythes of the Emperor, taking a scythe badge from the local agricultural workers, and the Chapter’s fortress-monastery, the space station Aegida, was built in orbit.
Much later, during the Second Tyrannic War around 993.M41, Hive Fleet Kraken overwhelmed Sotha. Genestealer cults rose up, the Scythes were nearly wiped out, and the planet was reduced to a dead world. Survivors fled to Miral, fought on, and were eventually forced to withdraw after Chapter Master Mansirius Thorcyra was killed. In the Dark Imperium era Sotha is being restored.
