The Battle of the Alaxxes Nebula was a Horus Heresy clash in 007.M31 where the Alpha Legion ambushed and besieged the wounded Space Wolves Legion, only for Leman Russ and his sons to fight their way out with unexpected help from a Dark Angels contingent.
What happened at the Alaxxes Nebula
Still battered from the Burning of Prospero, the Space Wolves were caught off guard by a large Alpha Legion force. The ambush scattered them, and Russ ordered a retreat into the Alaxxes Nebula.
The Alpha Legion followed and boxed them in, turning the nebula into a siege. Russ sent a distress call to his brother Jaghatai Khan of the White Scars, who was nearby and largely unaware of the civil war.
Khan didn’t come. Horus had told him Russ was the traitor, and word of Prospero’s destruction made him doubt. Instead of helping, he set course for Prospero to learn the truth himself.
Russ breaks, then comes back
With no rescue coming, Russ accepted defeat and shut himself in his private chambers aboard the Hrafnkel. A talk with Bjorn forced him to face what being the Emperor’s Executioner had cost his Legion.
First Captain Gunnar Gunnhilt took command and launched a desperate breakout. At the critical moment Russ returned, moved by Bjorn’s words, and pledged to chart his own path rather than live as an executioner.
Gunnhilt rammed his ship Ragnarok into the Alpha Legion battleship Delta, dying in the process. The Delta was destroyed, but the Alpha Legion still caught up with the fleeing Wolves.
The final battle and the Dark Angels rescue
A brutal last engagement followed, during which Russ apparently fought Alpharius himself, disguised as a rank-and-file Alpha Legion Terminator.
Salvation came from an unlikely quarter. The Dark Angels star fort Chimaera arrived, sent by a force loyal to Luther. Its commander, Ormand, judged the Wolves to be the real loyalists.
With Dark Angels support, the loyalists forced the Alpha Legion to withdraw. The contingent under Chapter Master Althalos had no idea about the Heresy or the trouble brewing on Caliban. Russ filled them in.

Why it matters
It’s the moment Russ stopped seeing himself as the Emperor’s tool and started leading the Space Wolves on his own terms. That shift shapes how the Legion fights through the rest of the Heresy.
It also explains why the White Scars didn’t join the loyalists right away. Khan’s choice to investigate Prospero first kept a major Legion on the sidelines at a crucial point.
And it ties the Space Wolves to the Dark Angels’ coming schism. The Althalos contingent learned about the Heresy here, far from Caliban, which adds another layer to the fallout between Luther’s faction and the rest of the Legion.
