The Twelfth Black Crusade

The Twelfth Black Crusade, better known as the Gothic War, was Abaddon the Despoiler’s sprawling campaign through the Gothic Sector from 142 to 160.M41. It’s the crusade where he grabbed the Blackstone Fortresses and nearly broke the Imperium’s hold on the region, and it sets up a lot of what comes later.

What was the twelfth black crusade?

It was a full-scale Chaos offensive into the Gothic Sector, fought between 142.M41 and 160.M41. Abaddon threw hundreds of planetary invasions and fleet actions at the Imperium, and the fighting only stopped when Imperial reinforcements forced him back into the Warp.

The cost was brutal. Several worlds were destroyed, four of the six Blackstone Fortresses were lost, and billions of Imperial citizens died. The Imperium officially won, but it was a win that left scars.

  • Ended with Abaddon’s retreat, but at enormous cost

Why Abaddon launched it

This crusade was part of Abaddon’s long game, the Crimson Path, which aimed to grind the Imperium down piece by piece. Before the shooting started, he had his sorcerer Zaraphiston hunt for powerful artefacts.

Zaraphiston’s divinations pointed Abaddon to Moriana, who revealed the locations of the Hand of Darkness and the Eye of Night, plus how to seize the Blackstone Fortresses. Those fortresses were the real prize.

How the war unfolded

Trouble kicked off early in 139.M41 when the scout frigate Ascendance picked up a garbled distress call from Arx station. By the time help arrived four months later, the place was a ghost ship, the garrison dead and mutilated.

Inquisitor Horst was sent to investigate, but there wasn’t much left to find. From there, the conflict escalated into a sector-wide brawl involving the Imperium, Chaos, Aeldari, and even Ork freebooterz and human pirates.

Outcome and legacy

The Imperium held the Gothic Sector, but Abaddon walked away with the Blackstone Fortresses and a lot of knowledge about how to use them. That mattered later, especially when he made his push on Cadia.

The twelfth crusade also showed how Abaddon operates: more than brute force, but careful preparation and artifact-hunting. It’s a template he’d reuse.
