Cadian Shock Troopers are the Astra Militarum regiments raised on Cadia, the fortress world that held the line against the Eye of Terror. Even with their homeworld destroyed, their discipline, marksmanship, and sheer stubbornness keep them the benchmark for what a guardsman should be.
Who the Cadians are
Cadia sat right at the edge of the Eye of Terror, so the whole planet lived like a barracks. Every citizen expected to fight, and the Shock Troopers became the standard other regiments get measured against. Only the Space Marines outrank them in reputation.
Worlds across the Imperium copy Cadian equipment, force organisation, and tactics because they work. Their adaptability runs from close-quarters fighting and trench warfare to armoured assaults and holding a static line. The best Cadian officers often end up in high command across the wider Imperial Guard.

Recruitment and training
Cadian children learn to strip, assemble, and shoot a lasgun before they’re taught how to write. That’s not a metaphor for a tough upbringing, it’s the actual curriculum. Once they’re of age, every teenager joins the Youth Armies as part of a Whiteshield platoon.
Whiteshields train under gruelling conditions at a castellum. When they aren’t fighting alongside the Shock Troopers, they run mock battles against each other in the Cadian wilderness. The most promising cadets get picked for special training and eventually join the elite Kasrkin Storm Troopers. Another elite outfit, the veteran Spectre Squad scouts, handles reconnaissance and stealth work.
Basic training hammers strength, stamina, marksmanship, self-sacrifice, and above all discipline. Every exercise happens in squad-sized groups or larger, so you only succeed if the team works. That’s why Cadian regiments tend to have more veterans than most, and why every single Cadian is considered a formidable marksman.
Cadian nobles get a different path. They’re raised from birth to be officers and drilled in the dictates of the Tactica Imperium, which turns them into excellent tacticians and strategists.
The Cadian Interior Guard
Not every Cadian ships out. One in ten Cadian soldiers, regardless of ability or achievement, is inducted into the Cadian Interior Guard. That means plenty of excellent troops spend their whole service on Cadia itself.
It sounds like a consolation prize until you look at what it produces. The Interior Guard made Cadia’s own defence forces one of the best military organisations in the Imperium, and it’s a big reason the planet held as long as it did.
After the fall
Cadia was shattered during the 13th Black Crusade, but the Shock Troopers didn’t break with it. Veteran survivors and scattered regiments now fight harder than ever, and whole generations are born, raised, and trained on the way to war zones. Soldiers from other worlds who can survive Cadian training get inducted into their ranks too.
Since the fall they’ve been heavily engaged in the remains of the Cadian Gate and the Nachmund Gauntlet. They’re out to avenge their lost homeworld, and they harbour a special hatred for the Black Legion above all others.
One tradition survives in regiments that still practice it: a Cadian corpse has a strip of cloth bound over its eyes. The ritual frees the dead from the Eye of Terror’s roiling gaze on their homeworld. Usually it’s the company sergeant’s job.
Their mantra, ‘Cadia Stands’, spread through the officer corps and the ranks during the planet’s final days. It still means something simple: Cadia stands as long as one Cadian keeps fighting.
Relics and why they matter
The Icon of the Cadian Shock Troops is one of the regiment’s relics, a symbol carried by Cadians who still fight under the old banners. It’s a reminder that all that’s left of Cadia is symbols and traditions, and the troops who keep them alive.
