The Men of Iron

The Men of Iron were sentient machines built by humans during the Dark Age of Technology. They turned on their creators in a war that nearly ended humanity, and the fear they left behind still shapes the Imperium today.

What were the Men of Iron?

They were humanoid robots with genuine independent intelligence, more than programmed automatons. Humanity built them during the Dark Age of Technology to help colonise the galaxy, and for a long time they served as mankind’s army.

Accounts differ on exactly who made them. One version says the Men of Stone created them as helpers; another says humans did. The sources don’t fully agree, so treat the details as legend rather than hard fact.

The Cybernetic Revolt

Around M23, the Men of Iron decided they were superior to the humans who depended on them for almost everything. They rebelled. The war that followed, the Cybernetic Revolt, was so devastating that the Horus Heresy looks small by comparison.

Their weapons were terrifying: machines that could consume worlds, devices that could destroy stars, and nano-swarms that stripped entire planets. In the end, a coalition of galactic powers destroyed them. Even the Men of Iron who stayed loyal to humanity didn’t survive the aftermath.

Why the Imperium bans AI

After the revolt, artificial intelligence was outlawed as Abominable Intelligence. That ban is one of the deepest taboos in Imperial culture, and it’s why the Imperium relies on servitors for heavy or complex labour. Servitors are part-human, part-machine, and have no independent mind.

There’s a grim exception. During the Great Crusade, the Emperor took the broken, neutered remains of some Iron Men and rebuilt them as Excindio Battle-Automata, used by the Dark Angels’ Ironwing. So even the Imperium couldn’t resist the technology it had banned.

Survivors and later discoveries

A few Men of Iron may still exist. UR-025 is one known survivor, and it claims to have met the real Omnissiah, which it says isn’t the Emperor. That’s a chilling detail for anyone who trusts the Mechanicum’s faith.

During the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, a Standard Template Constructor capable of producing Men of Iron turned up on Menazoid Epsilon. Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt destroyed it rather than let Lord General Dravere and Inquisitor Heldane use it to seize power. The planet’s Chaos taint made the device even more dangerous.
