The Night Lords Trilogy

The Night Lords Trilogy is Aaron Dembski-Bowden’s three-book Black Library series about Talos, a Chaos Space Marine of First Claw, 10th Company. It’s one of the best-loved Warhammer 40k novel series because it makes you care about villains without pretending they’re heroes.

What’s in the trilogy

The core is three novels: Soul Hunter (2010), Blood Reaver (2011), and Void Stalker (2012). Around them sit extra stories that fill in the edges.

The series follows Talos and his squad, First Claw of the Night Lords Legion’s 10th Company. They’re renegades, not loyalists, and the books never let you forget it.

  • Soul Hunter (2010) – novel one
  • Blood Reaver (2011) – novel two
  • Void Stalker (2012) – novel three
  • Throne of Lies (2010) – audio drama
  • Shadow Knight (2009) and The Core (2010) – short stories
  • Night Lords: The Omnibus (2014) collects the main trilogy

Why it matters

Before this series, Chaos Space Marines were often just the bad guys you shot at. Dembski-Bowden gave them history, humour, and a slow-burning tragedy that readers still talk about.

It’s also a gateway into Night Lords lore. If you want to understand why people love this Legion, these books are the usual starting point.

Where it fits in 40k

The Night Lords are a Traitor Legion from the Horus Heresy, so this trilogy sits in the 41st millennium as a sequel of sorts to that older conflict. It connects to wider Chaos Space Marines fiction and to the Legion’s own background.

You don’t need to read the Heresy books first, though. The trilogy stands on its own.

How to read it

Start with Soul Hunter and go in order. The short stories and audio drama are optional extras, best saved for after you’ve finished the novels.

If you’d rather have everything in one place, Night Lords: The Omnibus collects the three main books. There’s also a boxed set edition from 2016.

FAQ

Do I need to read Horus Heresy books first?

No. The trilogy explains what you need as it goes. Reading the Heresy first adds context, but it isn’t required.

What order should I read them in?

Soul Hunter, then Blood Reaver, then Void Stalker. The short stories and audio drama can wait until after.

Is the Night Lords Trilogy finished?

Yes. The main story wraps up in Void Stalker, so there’s no cliffhanger waiting for a fourth book.
