The Soul Drinkers series is Ben Counter’s six-novel run for Black Library, following an Imperial Fists successor chapter that gets declared renegade and has to work out what loyalty even means when the Imperium turns on you. It’s one of the better-known Space Marine series from the 2000s, and it’s still a solid entry point if you want a chapter-level story rather than a one-off battle novel.
What the series is
Ben Counter wrote the main run: Soul Drinker, The Bleeding Chalice, Crimson Tears, Chapter War, Hellforged, and Phalanx. Two novellas, Daenyathos and Traitor by Deed, sit alongside them.
The plot kicks off when the chapter tries to recover a spiritually important artifact and runs into a Technomagos of the Adeptus Mechanicus who won’t let them have it. From there a Daemon Prince tries to turn them to Chaos, the situation spirals, and the chapter ends up chasing what it calls true freedom. That freedom costs them plenty.
Reading order and collected editions
If you want the whole thing in fewer purchases, the omnibuses are the way in. The Soul Drinkers Omnibus covers the first three novels, and The Soul Drinkers Omnibus II picks up the rest. There are also two larger collections, Soul Drinkers: Redemption and Soul Drinkers: Annihilation.
The novellas slot in around the main run, but you can read the six novels first and come back to them without losing the thread.

Why the chapter matters
The Soul Drinkers aren’t your usual renegades. Most renegade Space Marines fall to the Chaos gods. These ones hate the Ruinous Powers as much as they hate the Imperium that cast them out, and they built an ideology around the idea that the Imperium betrayed what the Emperor stood for.
They still fight Chaos. They just don’t accept that the current Imperium is worth dying for, and some of them argued it should be torn down for humanity’s sake. That’s the tension the series runs on.
How it connects to wider 40k lore
The chapter started as an Imperial Fists successor, raised by Rogal Dorn during the Second Founding from fleet-based shock attack elements of the legion. Dorn gave them the Soulspear as a symbol that the successor chapters were still united in spirit.
They show up in the War of the Beast era too, fighting alongside other Imperial Fists successors under the Last Wall protocol. Later, after the original chapter’s story ends, the Soul Drinkers get refounded during the Ultima Founding. Those new Primaris marines don’t know their chapter’s history, and the wider Imperium now treats the name as heroic.
