The Wulfen are Space Wolves who’ve lost themselves to the beast inside. Their gene-seed carries a flaw that can turn a brother into a feral man-wolf, and that curse has shaped the chapter’s history for ten thousand years.
What the wulfen are
They’re not daemons or mutants from outside. The Wulfen are Space Wolves whose own gene-seed has overwhelmed them, stripping away reason and leaving a predator that fights on instinct. The condition is called the Curse of the Wulfen.
It starts with the Canis Helix, the first and most dangerous part of the gene-seed. Aspirants drink from the Cup of Wulfen and their bodies twist painfully. Some die. Others go feral and never come back.
The curse and the chapter
Even after a recruit survives the Test of Morkai and receives the rest of the gene-seed, the beast never fully sleeps. In battle, under extreme stress, a Wolf can slip back into that feral state.
That’s why Wolf Priests keep a close eye on their brothers. They watch for the signs and pull a warrior back from the edge before he loses himself completely.
The first wulfen
The name comes from Wulfen, a Fenrisian chieftain who was the first to accept Leman Russ’s offer to become a Space Marine. His secret jealousy of Russ twisted the gene-seed inside him, and he became a monster instead of a hero.
For a long time the chapter believed all Wulfen were beyond saving. But there were rare cases where a Wulfen could still be reasoned with and brought back under control.
The return and the hunt
In the closing years of M41, the Wulfen of the 13th Great Company reappeared. They rescued Harald Deathwolf’s forces at the Battle of Nurades, then were sent to Fenris to face judgment.
Ulrik the Slayer saw their return as an omen that Leman Russ was coming back. Ragnar Blackmane argued they had to be gathered before the Inquisition got to them. So the Great Companies set out on the Hunt for the Wulfen, chasing them across worlds near emerging Warp Storms.
The expeditions took them to places like Anvarheim, Dragos, and Suldabrax, where they fought daemons, Eldar, and worse to recover their lost brothers. The hope was simple: the Wulfen might lead them to their missing Primarch.

FAQ
What causes a Space Wolf to become a Wulfen?
It’s a reaction to the chapter’s gene-seed, specifically the Canis Helix. The transformation can happen during initiation or later, when stress triggers a relapse into a feral state.
Are the Wulfen evil?
No, they’re not Chaos-tainted. They’re victims of a genetic flaw. Some can even be calmed and controlled, though most stay feral.
Why did the Space Wolves hunt the Wulfen?
After the 13th Great Company returned, the chapter wanted to gather all Wulfen before the Inquisition found them. They also believed the Wulfen might lead them to Leman Russ.
