Cloneskeins

Cloneskeins are the stable genetic mutations that define the Kin of the Leagues of Votann. They’re the reason Kin are tougher than baseline humans, resistant to Chaos, and still wildly varied despite being clones.

What cloneskeins actually are

The First Ancestors built the cloneskeins as gene pool systems, and they’ve underpinned Kin genetics ever since. Every Kin is a clone, but the cloneskeins pull from deep and varied gene pools. That’s why no two Kin come out identical.

Think of them less as a single upgrade and more as a layered genetic toolkit. Different cloneskeins do different jobs, and a Kin’s mix shapes what they’re naturally good at.

What they do to a Kin’s body

The physical side is straightforward. Kin have denser bones and muscles than baseline humans, higher red and white blood cell counts, and serious strength and resilience. Some cloneskeins add faster reactions, infrared vision, or a limited tolerance for extreme heat, cold, gravity, and radiation.

Many cloneskeins also show on the outside. Unusual eye or skin colour, craggy subdermal layers, chemical body odours, and other tells are common. To humans that’d invite prejudice. To the Kin, it’s a badge of valued ability.

  • Denser bones and muscles than baseline humans
  • Higher red and white blood cell counts
  • Enhanced reaction times and infrared vision
  • Limited resistance to extreme temperature, gravity, and radiation
  • Visible markers like odd eye or skin colour and chemical odours

The Warp resistance angle

This is the part that really sets the Kin apart. Cloneskeins make their souls burn far more dimly in the Warp than human souls do. That means no uncontrolled psyker mutation across the species.

Only Kin with the right psychoactive cloneskeins can use Barrier-Tech, the gear that lets a psychically active Kin touch the Warp safely. Mutation, possession, and Chaos temptation are extremely rare among the Kin as a result.

How the Kin see them

Kin don’t treat cloneskeins as destiny. They see them as a nudge, something that guides a Kin toward a path rather than locking them into it. A Kâhl, Brôkhyr, Grimnyr, or Cthonian Miner might all have the same cloneskein and still end up somewhere completely different.

That’s a key cultural difference from how the Imperium treats genetic deviation. Where humans would see deformity, the Kin see a sign of what someone’s built for.

Key facts

  • Cloneskeins are stable genetic mutations created by the First Ancestors.
  • They underpin the genetics of every Kin in the Leagues of Votann.
  • Kin are tougher than baseline humans, with denser bones and muscles and higher blood cell counts.
  • Cloneskeins make Kin souls dim in the Warp, which is why Chaos corruption is so rare.
  • Many cloneskeins show physically, and the Kin treat those marks as signs of ability.
  • Kin believe cloneskeins guide a life path rather than predetermine it.

FAQ

Are all Kin clones?

Yes, every Kin of the Leagues of Votann is a clone. The cloneskeins draw from varied gene pools so they still end up distinct from one another.

Why are Kin so resistant to Chaos?

Cloneskeins make Kin souls dim in the Warp, so they don’t develop uncontrolled psyker mutations. Only those with psychoactive cloneskeins can use Barrier-Tech, and mutation or possession is very rare.

Do cloneskeins decide a Kin’s role?

No. The Kin see them as guidance, not fate. They push a Kin toward certain strengths but don’t dictate their occupation or future.
