Predator Tank

The Predator tank is the Space Marines’ standard battle tank, built as a heavier-armed, heavier-armoured take on the Rhino. If a Chapter needs tracked firepower that isn’t a Land Raider, this is usually what shows up.

What the Predator tank actually is

It’s a tracked battle tank used by the Adeptus Astartes, and it’s essentially a Rhino that’s been up-gunned and up-armoured. That shared chassis matters: a Chapter can convert Rhinos into Predators when losses bite, which the Death Spectres did after nearly losing their Destructors in the Vern IV offensive.

Production stays tightly controlled. Predators get built in a Chapter’s Armoury or on an allied Forge World, and most Chapters field somewhere between twenty and thirty of all types. Some are much heavier on armour, though those counts usually fold in Land Raiders too.

Patterns and armament

There are two main patterns, the Destructor and the Annihilator, and the difference comes down to what’s mounted in the turret. The Blood Angels and their Successor Chapters field the Baal Predator instead, an assault-focused variant built for close, fast aggression.

Crews matter as much as guns. A Predator runs with two Space Marines, a commander/gunner and a driver. They aren’t Techmarines, but they’re expected to know the machine inside out, and crewing one is a serious honour, second only to commanding a Land Raider.

Origins and the Ork problem

The design goes back to the Dark Age of Technology, when it helped humanity take and hold a huge number of worlds. The template is thought to have been developed in response to humanity’s first encounters with Orks.

That reasoning makes sense. The Rhino had done fine against less brutal opponents, but Ork warfare was close, violent and relentless. The Predator’s thicker armour shrugged off most Ork weapons of the era, while its own guns punched straight through Ork plating.

Ritual, names and machine spirit

Predators aren’t treated like disposable hardware. Every thirteenth vehicle built as a Predator gets blessed and purified more thoroughly than usual, and every 666th is melted down, with the material returned to the forge as a sacrifice to the Machine God.

Naming is its own ritual. A Predator only gets a name after the Emperor’s Tarot has been consulted, because crews believe the name shapes the tank’s personality. Some end up fearless, others stubborn when they’re on the defensive.

How it fits the wider lore

Think of the Predator as the middle of the Space Marine armour ladder. It sits above the Rhino it’s derived from and below the Land Raider in prestige and protection.

Chaos Space Marines field their own Predators too, and the Deimos pattern is another recognised build. Crews can even be hardwired into their stations as punishment or in case of failure, which tells you how the Imperium views these machines: valuable, sacred, and not entirely forgiving.

Key facts

  • The Predator tank is the Space Marines’ main battle tank, built on a heavier version of the Rhino chassis.
  • Its two main patterns are the Destructor and the Annihilator, with the Blood Angels fielding the assault-focused Baal Predator.
  • Most Chapters keep roughly twenty to thirty Predators of all types, produced by their Armoury or an allied Forge World.
  • It’s crewed by two Space Marines, and crewing one is a major honour behind commanding a Land Raider.
  • The design dates to the Dark Age of Technology, likely developed to counter early Ork warfare.

FAQ

What’s the difference between a Predator Destructor and a Predator Annihilator?

They’re the two main Predator patterns, and the split is mainly about weaponry. The Destructor is the general battle tank, while the Annihilator is set up for hunting armour.

How many Space Marines crew a Predator tank?

Two: a commander/gunner and a driver. They aren’t Techmarines, but they’re fully trained in operating and maintaining the vehicle.

Is the Predator tank based on the Rhino?

Yes. It’s a more heavily armed and armoured version of the Rhino, and Rhinos can be refitted into Predators when a Chapter needs replacements.
