The Hydra

The Hydra Flak Tank is the Imperial Guard’s go-to mobile anti-aircraft gun, a Chimera-hulled vehicle that fills the sky with autocannon fire when the Imperial Navy can’t guarantee air cover.

What the Hydra actually is

It’s a self-propelled anti-air platform built on the Chimera chassis, manufactured across hundreds of Forge Worlds. Regiments lean on it whenever Imperial Navy fighters and bombers aren’t available or air superiority is still up for grabs.

Its job is simple: keep friendly columns, depots and headquarters alive under enemy air attack. It does that with a turret full of tracking gear and four long-barrelled autocannons.

How it fights

The turret runs on a Machine Spirit-assisted mount with a predictive logic-engine. That lets it lock onto fast-moving aircraft and stay on them through evasive turns, which is the whole point of the design.

The quad autocannons throw heavy-calibre, high-velocity explosive rounds at a rate of around six hundred rounds a minute. Against aircraft that shreds fuselages. Against infantry and light vehicles it’s just as brutal, and a single Hydra can tear apart a formation in seconds.

  • Crew: a gunner and loader in the turret, commander, driver and comms operator in the hull.
  • Hull-mounted heavy bolter shared by the hull crew.
  • Ground-support use is technically against regulations, but commanders routinely look the other way.

How regiments use them

On paper, Hydras get grouped into a single company per regiment, but that’s mostly admin. In practice they’re split into squadrons or even single vehicles and handed out where they’re needed.

Artillery gets first claim on available Hydras, then tank companies, then HQ units and supply depots. Static sites often get fixed Hydra platforms instead of a mobile vehicle.

Variants and other users

The Anti-Tank Hydra swaps the anti-air focus for armour-piercing work, and the Super-Hydra is a heavier build. The chassis has also turned up in xenos hands, so you can’t assume every Hydra you meet is loyalist.

Some regiments are made up entirely of Hydras, known as heavy air defence regiments. Those get broken up and spread across a whole warzone, though they’ll occasionally fight as one unit.

FAQ

What is a Hydra Flak Tank?

It’s the Astra Militarum’s self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicle, built on the Chimera chassis and armed with four long-barrelled autocannons in an automated turret.

Can a Hydra shoot at ground targets?

Yes, and it’s very good at it. Using it that way breaks official regulations, but Imperial commanders usually ignore that because the results speak for themselves.

Why does the Imperium need Hydras if it has the Navy?

Because the Navy can’t be everywhere. When air superiority is contested or friendly aircraft aren’t around, Hydras are what keeps ground formations alive.
