The Pulse Rifle

The pulse rifle is the standard firearm of T’au Fire Warriors, and it’s one of the best basic infantry weapons in Warhammer 40k. It’s about the size of an Imperial lasgun but hits far harder, firing a plasma pulse that can drop an unarmoured Space Marine.

What the pulse rifle actually is

Every Fire Warrior team carries one, and so do their Shas’ui leaders. It’s a two-handed rifle built around a powercell that has to be swapped out after fifty shots, which is a real limitation you’ll feel in a long firefight.

The rifle works by running a particle through an induction field. That particle breaks down as it leaves the barrel and comes out as a plasma pulse, which is why the weapon hits so much harder than its size suggests.

How it performs

Pulse rifle shots punch through 300mm of brick and have enough stopping power to put down an unarmoured Astartes. That’s a lot of punch for an infantry rifle.

Where it falls short is against heavy armour. Power Armour soaks up pulse fire, with the layers under the outer shell absorbing the hit. Against Marines in full plate, you’re not going to cut through with raw rifle fire alone.

  • Penetrates 300mm of brick.
  • Can kill an unarmoured Astartes.
  • Struggles against Power Armour.
  • Powercell needs replacing after 50 shots.

The gyroscope trick

There’s a small circular device near the end of the barrel that isn’t a muzzle or a sight. It houses a gyroscope as part of an aim-stabilisation system, keeping the rifle steady and angled for the best shot at range even if the shooter’s hands are shaking.

That’s a big part of why pulse rifles out-range a lot of other infantry weapons. The T’au built accuracy into the gun itself rather than relying purely on the soldier.

Where it came from

The pulse rifle showed up early in T’au history, not long after the Mont’au ended. It first saw real use during the Campaign of Scouring against the Orks, where it was a big part of why the T’au won.

There’s also a sniper version called the Longshot Pulse Rifle, carried by Sniper Drones. Kroot Shapers can use pulse rifles too, which is a fun bit of cross-species lore.

Key facts

  • Standard weapon of T’au Fire Warriors and their Shas’ui leaders.
  • Fires a plasma pulse created when an induction field accelerates a particle that breaks down leaving the barrel.
  • Penetrates 300mm of brick and can kill an unarmoured Astartes, but can’t beat Power Armour.
  • Has a gyroscope-based aim stabiliser near the barrel for better accuracy at range.
  • Powercell must be replaced after fifty shots.
  • Debuted during the Campaign of Scouring against the Orks, early in T’au history.

FAQ

Is the pulse rifle better than a lasgun?

Yes. It’s roughly the same size but far more powerful, firing a plasma pulse instead of a laser beam. The trade-off is a smaller shot count before you need a fresh powercell.

Can a pulse rifle kill a Space Marine?

Only an unarmoured one. Against Power Armour the shot gets absorbed by the layers beneath the outer shell, so it lacks the penetration to reliably put a Marine down.

What is the Longshot Pulse Rifle?

It’s a sniper variant of the standard pulse rifle, used by T’au Sniper Drones.
