The Skorcha

The Skorcha is the Orks’ answer to a heavy flamer: a fuel-throwing weapon that sprays burning promethium over everything in front of it. It’s loud, it’s unreliable, and Orks can’t get enough of it.

What the skorcha actually is

A Skorcha is a flame thrower, plain and simple. A pressurised cylinder holds a volatile mix of gases and liquids. Crack the valve and that mixture gets forced out through the nozzle, drenching a target area in burning fuel. Whatever’s in front of it is a burning wreck within seconds.

In rules terms it’s the Ork equivalent of a Heavy Flamer, so it’s a template weapon rather than a precision tool. You point it at a direction and everything under the template has a very bad day.

Where you’ll see skorchas mounted

Skorchas are usually vehicle weapons rather than something a Boy carries. They turn up on Killa Kans, Grot Tanks, Deff Dreads, and as secondary armament on larger Ork war machines.

The best-known carrier is the Wartrakk Skorcha, a Wartrakk chassis with a Skorcha bolted on and a tank of promethium strapped to the back. Its crews are typically Burna Boyz who’ve decided that a man-portable burna just isn’t enough.

How Wartrakk Skorcha crews fight

Wartrakk Skorcha crews have a signature move: roar out of nowhere at the enemy line, pull a sharp turn, and hose the whole area with burning fuel. Then they vanish again in a cloud of choking fumes.

It’s fast, messy and deeply Orky. The vehicle is built for hit-and-run, not for standing and trading fire.

Why Orks love it

Skorchas are dangerous, unreliable and spectacular, which is basically the Ork checklist for a good weapon. A Skorcha that might cook its own crew is, to an Ork, just part of the fun.

That reputation is why Skorchas keep showing up across Ork vehicle designs, and why bigger versions like the Supa Skorcha exist for when a normal one isn’t enough.

Key facts

  • The Skorcha is the Orks’ heavy flamethrower, fuelled by a volatile mix of compressed gases and liquids.
  • It’s usually vehicle-mounted, appearing on Killa Kans, Grot Tanks, Deff Dreads and larger war machines.
  • The Wartrakk Skorcha is a Wartrakk chassis carrying a Skorcha and a promethium tank.
  • Wartrakk Skorcha crews favour hit-and-run attacks: charge in, spray flame, disappear in fumes.
  • Orks prize Skorchas precisely because they’re dangerous, unreliable and spectacular.

FAQ

What is a Skorcha in Warhammer 40k?

It’s a large Ork flame weapon, effectively the Ork equivalent of a Heavy Flamer. It sprays pressurised burning fuel over a target area from a cylinder of volatile gases and liquids.

What’s a Wartrakk Skorcha?

A Wartrakk chassis with a Skorcha heavy flamethrower mounted on it, plus a tank of promethium. Its crews are usually Burna Boyz who want more firepower than a handheld burna.

Is the Skorcha a template weapon?

Yes. Like a Heavy Flamer, it covers an area rather than targeting a single model, which is why it’s so good at clearing out infantry.
