The Typhon, better known as Typhus the Traveller, is the Herald of Nurgle and First Captain of the Death Guard Traitor Legion. He’s one of the setting’s most notorious Chaos Space Marines, a plague-ridden warlord who’s been spreading Nurgle’s gifts since the Horus Heresy.
What the Typhon actually is
The Typhon isn’t a machine or a ship, he’s a person. Born Calas Typhon on the death world of Barbarus, he became a Space Marine of the Death Guard and rose to First Captain under Primarch Mortarion.
After the legion fell to Nurgle during the Horus Heresy, Typhon was reborn as Typhus, Herald of Nurgle and commander of the 1st Plague Company. He also leads his own Plague Fleet, roaming the galaxy to spread Chaos corruption.
- Born: c. late M30 on Barbarus
- Species: Human/Overlord hybrid
- Titles: Herald of Nurgle, The Traveller
- Affiliation: Death Guard, 1st Plague Company, Nurgle
Origins on Barbarus
Typhon was a half-breed, born to a human mother and one of Barbarus’s Overlord tyrants. His mother was drowned by her fellow villagers for it, and Typhon grew up as an outsider.
As a child he showed uncontrolled psychic talent, smashing objects and withering plants when frightened or angry. He learned to master those powers, which impressed the elders and set him apart from his peers.
When Mortarion turned against the Overlords, a young Typhon was the first person he met and helped lead him to safety. That bond carried into the Death Guard, where Typhon became one of Mortarion’s closest comrades.
The Great Crusade and the fall
During the Great Crusade, Typhon earned a reputation for surviving wounds that would kill anyone else. On Rothric IX he took a blow to the head that should’ve been fatal, flew into a cold rage, and killed every tribal warrior around him with an iron bar.
His psychic potential was suppressed through training because Mortarion hated psykers, but it never truly went away. That latent power, and his willingness to use it, helped push the Death Guard toward Nurgle when the Legion was trapped in the warp during the Heresy.
Weapons and abilities
Typhon is a potent psyker, a rarity among the Death Guard, and he wields a manreaper, a two-handed scythe that’s become his signature weapon. He’s also host to the Destroyer Hive, a swarm of insects that lives inside his armour and can be unleashed on enemies.
As a Herald of Nurgle he’s incredibly resilient, able to shrug off injuries and effects that would cripple or kill lesser warriors. He combines brute durability with psychic might and a plague-ridden body that makes him almost impossible to put down.

Why he matters in 40k lore
Typhus is one of the most active and dangerous Chaos warlords in the setting. He’s more than a relic of the Heresy, he’s still out there, leading plague fleets and sowing Nurgle’s corruption across the galaxy.
He also represents the tragedy of the Death Guard: a legion that wanted to endure everything, only to be broken and remade by the Chaos God of decay. Typhus embodies that fall more than almost anyone else.
