Galactic Core

The Galactic Core is the astronomical centre of the galaxy, sitting inside the Ultima Segmentum. It’s a dense, violent region packed with rare resources, and it’s where most of the Leagues of Votann live.

What the galactic core is like

Picture a starfield so crowded that many worlds there never see true night. Starlight and strange energies hammer them constantly, and the sheer crush of stellar bodies creates enormous gravitational forces.

It’s also deeply hostile to travel. Ionic reefs, null-zones, supermassive black holes, extreme radiation, sentient nebulae and wandering singularities all make Warp transit through the core a nightmare.

Who lives there

Despite all that, life thrives. The Kin of the Leagues of Votann are the standout civilisation, with the vast majority of their people and every one of their ancient Holds located in the core. Their Cloneskein biological templates, inherited from the First Ancestors, let them adapt to conditions that would kill most others.

They aren’t alone. Large Ork populations and plenty of lesser species have carved out their own territory in the core as well.

Geography and known worlds

At the very centre of the core, and of the galaxy itself, sits a supermassive black hole. Beyond it lies the Cradle, a colossal nebula churning out new stars at a remarkable rate, plus a circumnuclear disk and other features.

The Imperium mostly can’t reach core worlds directly. When a planet drifts out of the core, often into the Maelstrom Zone, that’s when Imperial forces finally get a shot at the rare minerals and isotopes they covet.

How the Great Rift changed it

The Great Rift hit the core harder than anywhere else in the galaxy. Warp storms like Örgvayr, Töroll and Öggh Cyklöp swallowed whole systems, destroyed Kindreds and shattered several Leagues into fragments.

Those storms also dragged in hostile xenos such as the Septeryx, the Chrobdyr Ferrophagites and the Cult of Ohn, and opened the door for Chaos forces and Ork Waaaghs. Humans, Aeldari and Tau got caught in the upheaval too, flung across space and time into the core. The Leagues now deal with outsiders on a scale they’ve never seen before.

The Imperium’s current view is grim: the core is so consumed by Warp rifts that they’re not sure anything inside it can survive.

Key facts

  • The Galactic Core is the astronomical centre of the galaxy, inside the Ultima Segmentum.
  • It’s packed with rare resources, but Warp travel there is extremely dangerous.
  • The Leagues of Votann call it home, including all of their ancient Holds.
  • A supermassive black hole sits at the very centre of the core and the galaxy.
  • The Great Rift hit the core harder than any other region, spawning devastating Warp storms.
  • The Imperium can usually only access core resources when planets drift into the Maelstrom Zone.

FAQ

Where is the Galactic Core?

It’s the astronomical centre of the galaxy, located within the Ultima Segmentum.

Who lives in the Galactic Core?

The Kin of the Leagues of Votann are the dominant civilisation, along with large numbers of Orks and other lesser species.

Why is the Galactic Core so dangerous?

It’s full of supermassive black holes, ionic reefs, null-zones, extreme radiation, sentient nebulae and wandering singularities, all of which make Warp travel extremely hazardous.

What happened to the Galactic Core after the Great Rift?

It became the region most heavily affected by the Great Rift. Warp storms destroyed systems and Kindreds, and the Imperium now doubts whether anything there can survive.
