Catachan is a jungle death world in the Ultima Segmentum, and it’s the most infamous killer planet in the Imperium. Everything on it, from the plants to the predators, is hostile to human life, which is exactly why its people make such terrifying soldiers.
What makes Catachan so dangerous
The whole ecosystem is actively hostile. Vines crush bunkers, lichen eats through mortar, and poisons melt metal. Even Space Marines are said to avoid the place.
Catachan doesn’t need a Planetary Defense Force. Its wildlife does the job, and some of it has been shipped to other worlds to break sieges.
- Vines and lichen destroy buildings faster than they can be rebuilt
- Native predators include the Catachan Devil, one of the deadliest creatures in the galaxy
- The jungle actively pushes human settlements out, forcing constant relocation
How people survive there
Children learn to shoot before they can walk. Only the fast and the sharp-eyed reach adulthood, and by then they’re already hardened fighters.
Settlements are giant fortresses ringed by cleared plains for firing lines. Even so, the jungle and its creatures eventually force people to move on.
History
Catachan’s been colonized for longer than Imperial records remember. When the first probes arrived, it looked like a calm green orb from orbit. But the colony ships crash-landed, leaving the settlers stranded on one of the harshest planets in the galaxy. They barely survived, holed up in their wrecked spacecraft while a living, besieging jungle pressed in around them. Many died.
During the Thirteenth Black Crusade, Catachan found itself in the path of both a wounded Void Whale and a Waaagh! led by Freebooter Kaptain Badrukk. A Warp Storm called Bas Infernia blocked the Imperium from warning them. Then, when the Great Rift formed, daemons invaded. By the time Guilliman’s Indomitus Crusade arrived, the local Catachan regiments had already dealt with the threat.
Trade and survival
The fortified settlements produce little, but Catachan is rich in resources it trades for essential goods. Bio-specimens, exotic vegetation, toxins, and rare chemicals go off-world in exchange for what the colonists can’t make themselves. Military and medical supplies from the Departmento Munitorum keep the settlements alive and able to raise a tithe of soldiers. This arrangement has stayed the same for thousands of years.
Flora and fauna
Every plant on Catachan is poisonous, so foraging is impossible. Some secrete poisonous pollen that destroys air filters. Others trap and dissolve passing animals. Some poison the ground, turning it into boggy wasteland to trap invaders. Even a scratch can kill, as necrotic bacteria swarm in to putrefy the wound.
The animals are just as deadly. The Catachan Devil has jaws as big as a tank and is a major threat to human settlements. The giant Shambling Mamorphs of the volcanic regions are equally dangerous. And the Barbed Vemongorse is a sapient carnivorous plant that snakes toward anything living, injecting a neurotoxin that’s invariably fatal. It’s often found surrounded by the bones of its victims.
Climate, disease, and people
Catachan’s climate is as hostile as its wildlife. The jungle is humid and oppressive, and disease runs rampant. Necrotic bacteria and other pathogens make even minor injuries life-threatening. The people who survive here are tough, cunning, and deadly. They have to be.
Catachan’s only valuable resource is its people. They join the Imperial Guard as the Catachan Jungle Fighters, famous for their toughness, cunning, and preference for close-quarters ambushes. For them, the wars of the Imperium are no worse than daily life at home. They answer the Emperor’s call proudly, because nothing off-world is likely to be as lethal as what they grew up with.
