Farseer

A Farseer is a Craftworld Aeldari psyker who reads the threads of the future and steers events to keep their people alive. They’re among the most powerful mystics in the galaxy, and most spend their lives half-lost in trance, guiding a Craftworld’s fate rather than fighting on the front line.

What a Farseer actually is

Every Farseer starts out as a Warlock, a battle-psyker already deep along the Path of the Seer. Some of them get lost on that path the same way Exarchs get lost on the Path of the Warrior. Once a Seer takes up the mantle of Farseer, they’re stuck there. They can’t walk away and become something else. They’re on the Witch Path for good.

That’s a big deal for the Aeldari, because their whole culture is built around moving between different Paths to keep the mind from being consumed. A Farseer gives that up permanently. In exchange, they get centuries of refining their psychic sight, and a Craftworld gets one of its most valuable assets. Their whole existence revolves around steering events so the Aeldari survive one more century.

Seer runes and the trance

Farseers spend most of their time in a trance. Their spirit roams the Wraithbone of the Craftworld, following and directing the psychic energy that runs through the whole structure. From that state they watch potential futures unfold and work out which ones need to be changed. They’re rarely awake in the ordinary sense.

The tool for this is the seer rune. Casting and reading runes is how a Farseer turns a tangle of possible futures into something they can act on. It’s slow, deliberate work, endless calculations and prognostications rather than quick flashes of insight. If two futures both end badly, they look for a third.

  • Seer runes are the main tool for reading possible futures.
  • Farseers on jetbikes are called Farseer Skyrunners.

Why they’re so rarely on the battlefield

War isn’t really their job. A Craftworld only has a handful of Farseers, and they’re too busy guiding its future to spare more than one for a war. When a Farseer does show up with an army, they’re usually there to read the runes and pick the course of action that’s most fortunate for their forces. Their raw power outstrips a Warlock’s by a wide margin.

The results speak for themselves. When a cataclysm threatens the Aeldari, a Farseer has usually seen it coming and had it redirected, defused, or avoided before it ever lands. That might mean hitting a human outpost before its masters seal an alliance, or removing a minor Ork warlord before he can grow into a full Waaagh!.

Farseers guide armies and fleets into pre-emptive strikes, not defensive holding actions. They can plant a single thought in a dangerous Warboss’s mind to send him somewhere else entirely. A Craftworld’s survival often rests on threats being ended before they properly begin.

Crystal Seers

Some Farseers eventually stop returning from their trances. Their bodies settle into the Wraithbone as living crystal, still part of the Craftworld’s psychic network. These are the Crystal Seers, and they’re one of the reasons a Craftworld’s infinity circuit feels so alive.

They aren’t dead exactly. Their consciousness stays woven into the Craftworld, still feeding it psychic energy and still watching over the Aeldari who remain.

FAQ

How does someone become a Farseer?

They start as a Warlock on the Path of the Seer. If they get lost on that path, they take up the mantle of Farseer, which traps them in the role permanently. They then spend the rest of their life mastering their psychic sight.

Are Farseers stronger than Warlocks?

Yes. Farseers are more powerful psykers and focus on casting seer runes to work out the best course of action. Warlocks fight alongside Guardian squads, while Farseers direct the bigger picture.

Why don’t Farseers fight in every battle?

There are only a handful per Craftworld, and their main job is guiding its future. Armies are lucky to get one, because the rest can’t be spared.

Can a Farseer change the future?

They can nudge it. They see possible futures and work to steer events toward the ones where their Craftworld survives. It’s manipulation, not rewriting fate.

What is a Crystal Seer?

A Farseer whose body has turned to crystal after staying too long in the trance. Their mind stays part of the Craftworld, still guiding it.
