Synapse

Synapse is the psychic power that ties every Tyranid in a swarm to the Hive Mind. Without it, most of them stop being soldiers and start being animals.

What synapse actually does

Synapse is the psychic leash. It’s how the Hive Mind reaches out and gives orders to creatures that would otherwise just act on instinct. A swarm under Synapse moves as one organism, coordinated and purposeful.

Cut that link and the picture changes fast. Most Tyranids slip back into a feral state, running on raw Instinctive Behaviour rather than anything resembling a plan. A few can cope without it, genestealers being the obvious example thanks to their brood telepathy.

Who projects it

Only certain creatures can act as relays. These are the synapse creatures, and they tend to be the bigger, smarter organisms: Hive Tyrants, Tyranid Warriors, Broodlords, and specialist psykers like Zoanthropes.

What makes them different is physical as well as psychic. Their cortices carry greatly enlarged synapse networks that work as conduits, letting a portion of the Hive Mind’s will flow through them to nearby lesser organisms.

Some ordinary organisms can be adapted into the role. The Ravener Prime is the clearest case, fitted with a nodal Neuropredatory Crest to turn it into a relay.

Why it matters on the table

Synapse isn’t just background lore. It’s the mechanic that holds a Tyranid army together, and killing the relay creatures is a standard way to break one. Take out the nodes and the swarm starts behaving like a swarm.

One small note for older players: in 2nd Edition this same power went by the name Hive Mind.

FAQ

What is a synapse creature in Tyranids?

It’s a larger or specially adapted Tyranid that acts as a psychic relay for the Hive Mind. Its enlarged synapse network lets it pass the Hive Mind’s will on to nearby organisms.

What happens to Tyranids without Synapse?

Most revert to a feral state and fall back on Instinctive Behaviour. Genestealers are a notable exception, since brood telepathy lets them stay reasonably coordinated on their own.

Can any Tyranid become a synapse creature?

Some can, through Biomorphs. The Ravener Prime is the known example, using a Neuropredatory Crest to take on the relay role.
