The Grotesques

The Grotesques are the Drukhari’s hulking, lobotomised shock troops: prisoners remade by Haemonculi into muscle-bound killers that only stop when their master says so. They matter because they show the Dark Eldar at their most industrial, turning suffering into a weapon you point at the enemy’s front line.

What the grotesques are

Grotesques are monsters of muscle and bone grown by Drukhari Haemonculi. Unlike Wracks, nobody becomes one by choice. The raw material is usually a prisoner, and the transformation takes years, if not decades.

By the end, the victim is a towering thing with a wasp-thin waist, an engorged chest and thighs, and spines pushing out through the skin. Their hands are gone, replaced with metal claws or tubes that spray blood-ichor. A mask of black iron covers what’s left of the face.

  • Created by Haemonculi, not born
  • Grown from prisoners through a long, agonising process
  • Lobotomised near the end, so they obey without question
  • The Children of Bone coven is known for making unusually large ones

How they’re made

The process is chemical and surgical. The victim gets growth elixirs, macrosteroids, and muscle stimulants, while osseovirals drive bone growth into overdrive. That’s what pushes spines out through the skin.

Once the body is reshaped, the mind is shut down. A Grotesque is mostly lobotomised by the final stages, which is why it follows its Haemonculus master like a loyal pet outside of battle. In battle, stimulant injectors flip it into a frenzy that only stops on command.

On the tabletop

In 10th edition, Grotesques are a durable melee unit with Toughness 5, 4 wounds each, and a 6+ invulnerable save. They’re slow at 7″ but hit hard: Monstrous weapons swing four times at Strength 5, AP -2, Damage 2.

Their main trick is Monstrous Charge, which lets them re-roll charges, and Macro-steroids, which spends a Pain token to push melee Strength to 8 with Lethal Hits. They can ride in most Drukhari transports, but each model takes up the space of three.

How they fight

Grotesques are linebreakers. You send them at the front of an attack and they kill until told to stop. The catch is that they sometimes turn on each other, likely because of all the combat drugs in their system.

A Grotesque that kills its fellows usually ends up dead too, though it’s not clear whether that’s from Kabalite or Wych allies, or something else entirely.

  • Used as frontline shock troops
  • Will kill anything in reach, including other Drukhari
  • Aberrations are the most ferocious, given integrated weapons like Liquifier Guns, Flesh Gauntlets, or Monstrous Cleavers

Where they fit in Drukhari lore

Grotesques sit alongside Wracks and Talos as Haemonculus Coven creations, but they’re the least voluntary of the lot. Wracks choose their path; Grotesques are made.

That makes them a neat illustration of how the Drukhari treat life as raw material. They’re also a reminder that the Haemonculi’s craft isn’t just about staying young forever. It’s about turning bodies into tools.

FAQ

Are Grotesques voluntary like Wracks?

No. Wracks choose to join the Haemonculi, but Grotesques are made from prisoners who don’t get a say.

What are Aberrations?

Aberrations are the most ferocious Grotesques, given deadlier integrated weapons like Liquifier Guns or Flesh Gauntlets instead of just claws.

Can Grotesques ride in Drukhari transports?

Yes, but not Venoms. In other Drukhari transports, each Grotesque takes up the space of three models.
