The Hormagaunt

The Hormagaunt is the Tyranid swarm’s fast, expendable shock trooper: a gaunt bioform built to close the distance and tear apart anything it reaches. If you’ve seen a hive fleet invasion described, these are usually the first wave.

What the hormagaunt is

Hormagaunts are a specialised subspecies of the Tyranid gaunt, bred by the billions and thrown at a world before the main attack lands. Their subspecies name is Gaunti gladius.

They’re built for speed and melee. Four scything talons, powerful hind legs, and a bounding, insect-like gait that’s unsettling to watch. They don’t stop for injuries or exhaustion, and they’ll keep running down prey until it’s torn apart.

  • Four scything talons for close combat
  • Bounding leaps on powerful hind legs
  • Deployed in mycetic spores ahead of the main fleet
  • Extremely single-minded: they ignore pain and fatigue

How they fight and breed

Hormagaunts have a strong instinct for hunting and need very little direction from the Hive Mind. Once an attack is underway they’re usually left to it, though the Hive Mind can redirect them toward a more important target further away.

They feed on what they kill to fuel a hyperactive metabolism. That’s what lets them keep ripping and tearing without pause, but it comes at a cost: their lifespans are very short.

Unlike most Tyranid creatures, hormagaunts can lay hundreds of eggs in the ground and reproduce independently of a hive fleet. When one generation dies out, a fresh wave has usually already hatched and grown to take over.

Adaptations and hive fleet variants

There’s a lot of variation within the hormagaunt subspecies, and hive fleets adapt them for different problems. Known tweaks include greater strength, faster reactions, and a thicker carapace.

Different hive fleets field their own colour schemes, and you’ll see hormagaunts painted for Leviathan, Gorgon, and Kronos among others.

Why they matter

Hormagaunts are the flood before the storm. Dropped in numbers so large that orbital defences can’t kill them all, the survivors hit the ground and start overwhelming defenders before the rest of the swarm arrives.

They’re also one of the clearest examples of what makes the Tyranids frightening: cheap, disposable, self-replacing, and relentless. A world can kill a million of them and still be overrun by the next generation.

Key facts

  • Hormagaunts are a subspecies of Tyranid gaunt, formally Gaunti gladius.
  • They’re armed with four scything talons and move in fast, bounding leaps.
  • They’re deployed in their billions ahead of a main hive fleet attack.
  • They can lay eggs and reproduce independently of a hive fleet.
  • Their hyperactive metabolism grants relentless stamina but a very short lifespan.
  • Known adaptations include greater strength, faster reactions, and thicker carapace.

FAQ

What’s the difference between a hormagaunt and a termagant?

Hormagaunts are a specialised offshoot of the termagant bioform, built for melee with scything talons instead of ranged weapons. Termagants tend to hang back and shoot; hormagaunts charge in.

Can hormagaunts reproduce without a hive fleet?

Yes. They can lay hundreds of eggs in the ground, so a new generation can hatch and mature after the first one dies, even if the fleet has moved on.

Why do hormagaunts die so quickly?

Their hyperactive metabolism lets them fight without rest, but it burns them out fast. Short lifespans are the trade-off for that relentless pace.
