The Krootox

The krootox is a huge, muscle-bound offshoot of the Kroot race, bred into a dead end by their own evolutionary gift. Too strong to ignore and too dim to lead, they’ve become living gun carriages for T’au and Kroot forces across the galaxy.

What is a krootox?

A krootox is a massive, over-muscled variant of the Kroot, created when a Kindred ate the flesh of especially powerful and savage beasts. That meal pushed their adaptation too far: the body ballooned, the mind collapsed, and what’s left is a creature capable of little more than brute force.

They aren’t naturally aggressive. Left alone, a krootox is a placid grazer. The Kroot keep them alive as war-beasts, and without that partnership the species would likely have died out long ago.

  • Dead-end evolutionary path of the Kroot
  • Herbivorous and normally calm
  • Fights to the death to defend its Kroot handlers
  • Covered in ornaments and fetishes that show off a Kindred’s status

How the krootox fights

On the battlefield, a krootox carries a single Kroot rider and a Kroot gun, an oversized version of the standard Kroot rifle. The beast’s bulk makes it a stable firing platform, while its fists can crush power armour and vehicle hulls with equal ease.

The catch is control. A krootox is only dangerous while a Kroot is steering it. If the rider dies, the beast wanders off aimlessly and becomes just another casualty.

Krootox herds and rampagers

Krootox are usually fielded in herds, roaming packs of mobile gun platforms crewed by Kroot Carnivore handlers. Massed together, they lay down serious firepower and can charge into melee when the shooting stops.

Juveniles are a different story. Hot-tempered and easier to rile, they’re herded into thundering packs called Krootox Rampagers. These packs ambush and charge ahead of the main force, their riders hurling javelins and swinging hunting blades. Within a wider Kroot Hunting Pack, Rampagers act as linebreakers and skirmish cavalry.

Why the krootox matters

The krootox is a neat piece of Warhammer 40k worldbuilding: it shows the Kroot’s flesh-eating adaptation as a genuine double-edged sword, more than a power-up. It also gives T’au and Kroot armies a tough, cheap-ish hybrid unit that shoots and fights.

For hobbyists, the krootox is a classic Kroot model that’s been updated over the years, with a 2001 Krootox Rider and a 2024 redesign alongside the Kroot Hunting Pack release.

FAQ

Is a krootox intelligent?

No. It’s a dead-end evolutionary branch of the Kroot, and its mind is barely capable of anything beyond raw brutality. It’s not naturally aggressive, though, and stays calm unless provoked or directed by a Kroot rider.

What’s the difference between a krootox and a Krootox Rampager?

Rampagers are juvenile krootox, which are more hot-tempered and easier to rouse into a charge. They’re used as ambush troops and skirmish cavalry, while adult krootox usually serve as steady mobile gun platforms.

Do krootox eat meat?

No, they’re herbivores. Despite their brutal appearance and the Kroot’s own carnivorous diet, krootox graze rather than hunt.
